REVOLVING DOOR:
Marilyn Denis has announced she’ll be stepping away from the CHUM 104.5 morning show this summer after 40 years waking up Torontonians. Denis, 67, told listeners she decided to make the announcement now because she “can’t hold a secret very well.” Denis previously wrapped her daytime show, The Marilyn Denis Show, in 2023, following 13 seasons on CTV and a 34-year career in daytime television as host of Citytv’s Cityline for nearly 20 years. Born in Edmonton, but raised in Pennsylvania, Denis got her start in broadcasting in 1976 as the first woman DJ at KRPL Moscow, Idaho, before moving to Calgary to join CHFM and CJAY-FM, while working at CTV Calgary as a sports, weather, and entertainment reporter and freelancer for TSN. She joined the CHUM morning show in 1986. Read more here.

Graham Richardson has been appointed Ottawa Bureau Chief for CTV National News. Richardson was CTV Ottawa’s chief anchor for 14 years, before stepping away in 2024 to join Edelman Global Advisory as Managing Director. Prior to joining CTV Ottawa in 2010, he was a Parliamentary correspondent for CTV National News and served as L.A. Bureau Chief.

Terry Evans, who has been a staple for K97 (CIRK-FM) Edmonton listeners for four decades, has hosted his last show. Evans, who has been heard on the morning show since 1999, just celebrated his 40th anniversary on the Edmonton airwaves on Feb. 4 – the date he arrived at K97 in 1986. He had worked with the station since that time, with the exception of a five-year stint at Edmonton’s 100.3 The Bear (CFBR-FM) from 1992-97. Read more here.

Tony Sowan and Graeme Thomson have announced that Friday will be their last show on Stingray Radio’s Zed 98.9 (CIZZ-FM) Red Deer. Thomson has been with the station since 2022, while Sowan has been on-air at Zed 98.9 since 2012. Both are moving on to other opportunities outside radio.

Justin Crouch is joining Pattison Media as a Creative Writer in Red Deer. Crouch was most recently on-air in the midday time slot at Harvard Media’s X92.9 (CFEX-FM) Calgary from 2022-24. Prior to that, he worked in the Red Deer market as music director and drive host at X100.7 (CKEX-FM).
Jeremy Baker is now also being heard in middays on 102.1 The Edge (CFNY-FM) Toronto from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. ET, following the recent release of MK Bowyer. His show additionally airs across Corus Radio stations CFOX Vancouver (2 p.m. – 6 p.m.), 107.3 The Edge (CFGQ-FM) Calgary (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.), FM96 (CFPL-FM) London (Sunday, noon – 4p.m.).

Steve Paikin is joining Citytv’s Breakfast Television in a segment called Paikin on Politics, alongside BT reporter Caryn Ceolin. The daily segment is airing at 6:50 a.m. ET. Paikin, best known for his 19 seasons as host of TVO’s The Agenda, wrapped production on the show last April, remaining the host of TVO Today Live, the Paikin Podcast, and co-host of the #onpoli podcast.

Joshua Goeree has left 570 NewsRadio (CKGL-AM) and CityNews Kitchener as he takes a break from journalism. Goeree joined 570 NewsRadio in 2022, fresh off completing his Master’s in Communication and Journalism at Western University.

Noah Rishaug is taking on a new role with Global Saskatoon. Rishaug returns to the market, where he was previously a reporter with CTV News, after working with Global Edmonton for the past year.

Mai-An Dimaculangan has a new role with Bell Media in Winnipeg as an Account Executive, repping CTV, Virgin Radio 103.1 (CKMM-FM), Bounce 99.9 (CFWM-FM), TSN, and Astral Out of Home. She arrives from Pattison Media where she’s sold radio and digital for the past two years.

Tristan Beaubien has joined Stingray as an Affiliate Marketing Specialist (Canada & APAC). Beaubien arrives from footwear manufacturer Wolverine Worldwide, where he served as Field Marketing Specialist for the Saucony and Merrell brands in Eastern Canada and B.C.

Nic Meloney is taking a leave of absence from CBC/Radio-Canada. The Production Executive and CBC Unscripted Senior Advisor is stepping away from his position for one year. Meloney has been with CBC since 2016, starting out as a video journalist in Nova Scotia.
RADIO & PODCAST:
The CRTC has set a virtual hearing for April 30, at which it will consider a change of ownership for half a dozen radio stations and an application from CBC to convert its AM station in Cornerbrook, NL to FM. Among the change of ownership applications is Stingray Radio’s bid to acquire CHUP-FM Calgary, currently branded as Hot AC format C97.7, from Rawlco Radio. Rawlco is in turn seeking approval to acquire 92.9 The Bull (CKBL-FM) Saskatoon from Saskatoon Media Group. Two applications by Arsenal Media are also being considered – the first around its effort to acquire French-language sports network BPM Sports from RNC Media, including CKLX 91.9 Montreal, CHXX 100.9 Quebec City, and CFTX 96.5 Gatineau. Arsenal is also seeking approval to acquire Radio Classique CJSQ 92.7 FM Quebec City. Read more here.
The CRTC has approved CBC’s application to replace AM radio station CFFB Iqaluit with an FM transmitter. The public broadcaster indicated in its application that any potential failure of CFFB’s current infrastructure could cause the loss of CBC Radio One programming in the region. The new FM station would serve as the originating station for the remaining rebroadcasting transmitters of CFFB going forward, and the existing CFFB-AM transmitter, after a simulcast period, decommissioned.
Radiodays North America has unveiled its lineup of speakers for its fourth consecutive conference, May 5-6, in downtown Toronto. Among the highlights on this year’s preliminary schedule are Music, Radio & Regulation – An Open Discussion revisiting last fall’s CRTC hearings on Canadian Content in which broadcasters and music industry groups called for urgent updates to the regulatory framework. Moderated by Radiodays North America programming consultant Ross Davies, those participating include Stingray Radio President Steve Jones; Susan Wheeler, VP Regulatory Broadcasting, Rogers Communications; Scott Shortliffe, VP of Broadcasting at the CRTC; and Patrick Rogers, CEO, Music Canada.
Radiodays North America is additionally presenting Podcast Creators Day on May 7, in partnership with CBC, the National Campus & Community Radio Association (NCRA), and Canadaland. The event will feature sessions on audience growth, monetization, video strategy, AI tools, and brand partnerships. The Pro Bono Group is rolling out two new PSAs under its Pro Canada Project from singer/songwriter Amy Sky and JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter and producer Marc Jordan. “I’m thrilled when artists around the world record my songs,” notes Sky, who has had her songs recorded by the likes of Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper and Olivia Newton-John. “You could say that’s one way to shop Canadian.”

SIGN OFFS:

Jim “Boomer” Gordon, 55, on Feb. 23 after a three and a half year battle with cancer. Born in Hamilton, Gordon turned his encyclopedic knowledge of sports into a career. Best known for his work with SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, Gordon started behind-the-scenes working as a technical producer and in research, before sitting in as a producer with Phil Esposito. He went on to host daily afternoon show “The Point” alongside co-host Jake Hahn and was a pioneer among broadcasters in his knowledge and coverage of fantasy hockey. Despite his diagnosis, he continued on-air up until late January, when he took a leave of absence due to a decline in his health.
TV & FILM:

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (the Canadian Academy) has unveiled its first round of 2026 Special Award recipients to be recognized during Canadian Screen Week, including actor Mike Myers, sports broadcaster Hazel Mae, and Canadian Film Centre (CFC) Executive Director maxine bailey. Myers will be presented with the Academy Icon Award, while Mae – a member of Sportsnet’s Toronto Blue Jays broadcast team – is being awarded with the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism. bailey is being recognized with the Changemaker Award honouring a Canadian media professional who is actively engaged in advancing equity and inclusion by confronting racism and discrimination. CBC Sports and the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have announced a landmark five-year broadcast partnership that will see marquee games air and be livestreamed across CBC platforms, including the inaugural best-of-three CEBL Finals. CBC Sports was the league’s broadcast partner for its inaugural seasons from 2019-22. Bell Media’s TSN and its French-language counterpart RDS have carried live coverage of select games for the past number of years. The new partnership will see CBC Sports offer select regular-season games on CBC TV and all regular-season and playoff games on CBC Gem and the CBC Sports YouTube channel. Read more here.
CBC/Radio-Canada has undertaken a survey measuring Canadians’ perceptions of Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 coverage. Three quarters of respondents agreed (6/10 on a 10-point scale) that the public broadcaster provided high-quality coverage of the games and that the coverage contributed to a shared sense of identity among Canadians. Hockey, figure skating and speed skating were among the sports Canadians said they most enjoyed watching during the Games. Almost half of respondents (48%) said they watched the Olympics with friends and family. According to the survey, 71% said CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage allowed them to follow athletes from their region.
CBC’s Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games live coverage gets underway on Friday, March 6 with the Opening Ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET (10:30 a.m. PT) on CBC and CBC Gem, hosted by CBC Paralympics daytime host Anastasia Bucsis, Paralympian and CBC Paralympics primetime host Stef Reid, and Paralympian Marissa Papascontantinou. Following the main event, a live show hosted by CBC Sports Paralympics digital host Allison Lang will be available on the CBC Sports YouTube channel, discussing the athlete parade, torch lighting, and Italian cultural showcase. A primetime encore of the Opening Ceremony will broadcast at 8:30 p.m. ET (5:30 p.m. PT).

AMI docuseries All In is set to launch Thursday, May 14, featuring Canadian para-snowboarder Tyler Turner, co-captain of Team Canada at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games. The docuseries follows Turner as he embarks on a transformative journey of self-discovery through sport. From para climbing and wheelchair rugby to sit skiing and sledge hockey, the series showcases the athlete’s determination to master new skills and connect viewers to adaptive sports.
GameTV and Paramount+ in Canada have announced a March 26 premiere date for Hate The Player: The Ben Johnson Story, a six-part mockumentary reimagining of the “dirtiest race in history.” The first two episodes of the series will drop March 26 on GameTV and be available to stream on Paramount+ in Canada the next day, with two new episodes released weekly. The series is created by writer Anthony Q. Farrell (The Office, Shelved, Run the Burbs), who also serves as showrunner and Executive Producer. Directed by R.T. Thorne (The Porter) and Cory Bowles (Trailer Park Boys), the series is set against the backdrop of the 1988 Summer Games. Shamier Anderson (John Wick: Chapter 4, Invasion) stars as Ben Johnson, with Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor (Greenland, The Babysitter) in the role of competitor Carl Lewis.
TSN and RDS launch coverage of the 2026 Formula 1 season, starting March 5. The season begins with the Australian Grand Prix Practice, followed by Qualifying on March 6, and race day coverage March 7, featuring Sky Sports’ pre- and post-race content, including analysis led by the voices of F1, David Croft and Martin Brundle. The networks’ F1 coverage is highlighted by the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, May 24, live on TSN, CTV, and streaming on Crave through the live CTV channel. TSN’s auto racing reporter and former pro racing driver Tim Hauraney delivers news and analysis on Sportscentre and TSN.ca throughout the season.
The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has released a preview of a number of changes to its 2026–27 Content Program Guidelines. The Distributor Program will become an Envelope program. To determine Envelope Allocations for the 2026–27 year, CMF will employ a formula that measures a distributor’s historic access to funds from its Linear programs, including the Distributor Program. The Broadcaster Envelope Program – English and French Factor weights will also change. CMF will publish more details on April 1.
Bell Media says its Crave streaming service will remain home to HBO and HBO Max content in Canada “for the foreseeable future” as Paramount gets set to merge with Warner Bros. Discovery. Announced last week, the $110B merger – that follows Netflix’s move to walk away from the months-long takeover battle – will result in the combined company owning a film library of more than 15,000 titles and thousands of hours of television programming. Further details of the merger indicate Paramount and Warner Bros. plan to establish “a global streaming competitor,” combining Paramount+, HBO Max and Pluto into a “premier direct-to-consumer platform.” A Bell Media spokesperson told Broadcast Dialogue that its multi-year licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Crave Original comedy series The Trades returns for its eight-episode third season, continuing to follow pipefitter Todd Stool (Robb Wells) as he navigates his blue-collar life at a refinery with a little “help” from his family and friends. Filmed in Ontario and Nova Scotia, the first two episodes of Season 3 drop on Friday, March 20, followed by new episodes on subsequent Fridays.
Canadian Film Fest (CFF) has announced its lineup for its milestone 20th anniversary edition, March 24-29 at Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto, presenting 16 features and 40 shorts from Canadian filmmakers. This year’s festival unfolds under its latest campaign, “Eyeballs Up,” a rallying call for audiences to look up, lean in and recognize the bold creativity of Canadian film. CFF will kick off with the Canadian premiere of Scott Anthony Cavalheiro’s crime thriller Plan C starring Vivica A. Fox, preceded by the short film I Am Pleased from CFF 2025 You-CAN-Pitch Competition winner Vanessa Magic.
REGULATORY, TELECOM & MEDIA:
Local Independent Television Stations (LITS), a coalition of broadcasters from across the country, have formally asked the CRTC to compel Meta to come to the bargaining table under the Online News Act. The broadcasters, which include Channel Zero, CHEK Media, Dougall Media, MCA Media Group, Newfoundland Broadcasting, Pattison Media, RNC Média and Télé Inter-Rives, maintain in their application that Meta’s so-called “news ban” – which took effect in August 2023 – has not succeeded in removing news from its platforms, but rather simply blocked verified Canadian news outlets, “leaving space for workarounds, copycat content, and AI-generated material that mimics legitimate journalism.” Read more here.
The CRTC has published its updated Strategic Plan: Connecting Canadians through technology and culture, as it sets out “to be a modern, inclusive, and timely regulator.” The commission says it’s continuing to prioritize areas that have the greatest impact, including modernizing Canada’s broadcasting framework. Quebecor recorded a $47.3 million (3.2%) increase in revenues in Q4 2025, a $66.2 million (21.9%) increase in free cash flows, and a $21.4 million (3.6%) increase in adjusted EBITDA, excluding the unfavourable impact of a $66.8 million increase in stock‑based compensation charges and the $43.9 million favourable impact of a retroactive agreement for carriage fees for the Media segment’s specialty channels. Year-over-year, Q4 revenues increased in Telecommunications ($18.9 million or 1.5% of segment revenues) and Media ($44.1 million or 22.7%), due mainly to the carriage fee agreement for its specialty channels, including TVA Sports. Revenues decreased in Sports and Entertainment ($10.8 million or ‑15.6%).
TELUS and AST SpaceMobile have signed a commercial agreement to bring space-based cellular broadband service to places it’s never reached before across Canada. As part of the agreement, TELUS will invest in ground-based satellite infrastructure and become an equity shareholder in AST SpaceMobile. Planned for late 2026, the connectivity is made possible by combining AST’s Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, with what TELUS says are the largest commercial phase arrays ever deployed in LEO and TELUS’ wireless network, enabling connectivity in areas where traditional cellular network infrastructure is not available.
The Delegation of the European Union to Canada and the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) have opened submissions for the 2026 edition of the European Union-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship. The deadline to apply is May 6. The study tour to Brussels will take place this fall.
RTDNF Canada has opened its financial assistance scholarships for emerging journalists. Canadian journalism students are invited to apply at no cost for the following scholarships and $10,000 fellowship: the BNN/Jim O’Connell Scholarship awarded for the best business story; CBC Barbara Frum Scholarship for the best interview; JJ Richards Scholarship for a radio documentary or podcast; Friends of Canadian Media Scholarship for a news story focused on Canadian current affairs; CBC David Suzuki Scholarship for a student from a racialized community with a demonstrated interest in science journalism; and the Sachedina/CTV News Fellowship to produce a substantial and original piece of journalism significant to Canada and Canadians. The deadline to apply is April 30.

Text Groove announced its strategic expansion into Europe ahead of Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, March 2-5, in Barcelona. The Victoria-headquartered company says the expansion reflects growing demand for reliable, compliant audience engagement infrastructure across the region. “Europe represents a natural next chapter for Text Groove,” said Curtis Machek, CEO & Co-Founder, in a company announcement. “We’ve spent a decade supporting live, time-sensitive, audience engagement infrastructure where reliability and compliance matter. The 2026 NAB Show, April 18-22 at Las Vegas Convention Center, will expand its Sports Summit to four days, convening leaders from across leagues, teams, broadcast networks, streaming platforms and tech companies to examine the rapidly evolving business of sports media. The four-day event will explore how production, distribution, investment and policy are reshaping live sports experiences and driving new revenue opportunities, open for the first time to all attendees with a Show Floor Pass. Headlining the summit is Jon Miller, president of Acquisitions and Partnerships at NBC Sports.
