Kayla Grey

Kayla Grey has announced her exit from TSN after a decade. Grey, who revealed the move in a lengthy Substack post on Monday, has been with the network since 2015 when she started as a producer at TSN 1050 (CHUM-AM). By 2018, she had made her debut on Sportscentre, becoming the first Black woman to host a national sports highlight show. Grey went on to launch and co-executive produce her own show, The Shift. While she hasn’t disclosed where she’s headed next, Grey was seen on Amazon Prime earlier this year as a WNBA sideline reporter. Read more here.

Brent Bambury
Brent Bambury

Brent Bambury is retiring after more than four decades with CBC. Bambury announced his retirement on Saturday morning’s episode of Day 6, the weekly radio show blending current affairs, comedy and pop culture, he’s hosted since 2010. Born and raised in Saint John, NB, Bambury started his career with the public broadcaster in the Saint John newsroom in 1979. He’s best known for hosting all-night underground music show Brave New Waves, before moving into television in the early 1990s, serving as an entertainment reporter for CBC TV’s Midday and later as its co-host. Julie James

Julie James is joining Evanov Communications in the role of Assistant Brand Manager of flagship Top 40/Dance station, Z103.5 (CIDC-FM) Orangeville, and Classic Hits/AC format, Lite 92.1 (CKPC-FM) Brantford. James most recently served as APD for Toronto’s CHFI and was the National Head of Pop Programming for Rogers Sports & Media. Read more here.

 

Prime Video has unveiled its 2026-27 NHL on Prime broadcast team, adding a new French-language crew led by Alain Crête. He shares play-by-play duties with Michaël Roy alongside analyst and former NHL defenceman Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre. Maxime Lalonde, who is currently heard on BPM Sports Network, joins as host for Wednesday Night Hockey coverage, with analysts and former NHL’ers Guillaume Latendresse and Jean-Sébastien Giguère.

For NHL on Prime in English, the returning cast is led by play-by-play announcer John Forslund, alongside analysts Jody Shelley in the booth and Thomas Hickey between the benches, with Andi Petrillo reporting rink side. Read more here.

Jennifer Botterill

Jennifer Botterill, formerly the sole woman on the Hockey Night in Canada studio panel for more than half a decade, will return to NHL on TNT this season. The Hockey Hall of Fame inductee and three-time Olympic champion recently released her memoir, Why Not You: My Story of Perseverance, Hockey, and Olympic Gold.

Francois Gagnon

Francois Gagnon is retiring from RDS after 18 years with the network and 40 in media – 30 of those years covering the Montreal Canadiens. Gagnon worked for Le Droit, Le Soleil and La Presse before joining RDS, where he became a regular on L’Antichambre and Hockey 360. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2025.

Freddie Mislawchuk is retiring after 34 years as a TSN cameraman. Based in Winnipeg, Mislawchuk first started working for the network in 1992.

Paige Martin

Paige Martin has been named the Edmonton Oilers new lead reporter and host for the 2026-27 season. Martin has been working with the club since 2023 as a digital content producer.

Rod Black

Rod Black has surfaced as a guest host on Corus Entertainment’s 640 (CFIQ-AM) Toronto on 640 Midday. Black retired from TSN in 2021 after three decades and a 40-year career in sports media.

Rob Suski
Rob Suski

Rob Suski is retiring from the C95 (CFMC-FM) Saskatoon morning show after 26 years. Alongside longtime co-host Shauna Foster, Suski has notably helped support many causes over the years, including the annual C95 Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer Research, which has raised more than $7.3 million.

Wayne Thibodeau

Wayne Thibodeau is moving into a familiar role as Provincial Affairs Reporter for CBC Prince Edward Island. Wayne spent nearly two decades covering the P.E.I. legislature for the Charlottetown Guardian, before joining CBC seven years ago. He is currently filling in as host of CBC’s flagship morning show, Island Morning, on CBC Radio One and CBC-TV.

Isaac Callan

Isaac Callan has announced his departure from Global News. He’s been an Online Digital Broadcast Journalist with the network since 2022, focused on covering Queen’s Park. Callan is joining CBC Toronto as a City Hall Reporter.

Natalie van Rooy

Natalie Van Rooy is leaving CTV Ottawa to join CP24 in Toronto as a weekend anchor/reporter. Van Rooy had been with CTV since 2016, initially as a videographer in Northern Ontario, and then Kitchener, before joining CTV Ottawa in 2022.

Meredith Olmstead

Meredith Omstead has left her producing role on CP24 Breakfast after three years. While not revealing her next move, Omstead will be staying on with Bell Media.

Logan Gordon

Logan Gordon is being heard on Calgary Flames broadcasts on QR 770 (CHQR-AM). Gordon formerly was heard in afternoons on Sportsnet 960 The Fan (CFAC-AM), in addition to serving as a Flames game day reporter.

Ronit Novak

Ronit Novak is joining Common Wealth Retirement as Content Production Manager, helping build the company’s in-house content studio. Novak, who was formerly Director of Photography and Videography for Toronto Life, is also editorial director of The Grain – a podcast and editorial platform that explores the impact of AI on the creative industries.

Mel Woods

Mel Woods has left their position at Xtra as Senior Editor, Content Development. Woods had been working with the publication since 2021 and took on an editorial role in 2023. The former HuffPost Canada Trends Editor plans to expand their freelance writing, among other new opportunities. 

Stephanie Fast

Stephanie Fast is joining Cineflix as Head of Production. Fast steps into the role following Sherri Rufh’s decision to retire as EVP, Production & Administration at the end of the year. Working closely with Michael Kronish, President of Productions, Fast will provide strategic leadership across the company’s development, production, post-production, and operational functions, and serve as a key broadcaster-facing executive. She joins Cineflix from Frantic Films, where she most recently served as President.

Blue Ant Media announced a series of appointments this week intended to support the company’s multi-national streaming, production studio, and rights-management businesses through an integrated marketing model. The new appointments include: Allison Carr as Senior Vice-President, Marketing, Consumer Brands; Jeff Cooke as Marketing Manager, Studios & Rights; Lindsay King as Marketing Manager, Consumer Shows; and Alan Sencich as Marketing Manager, Canadian Media. Anna Molloy also takes on an expanded role as Senior Manager, Marketing, Rights & Streaming, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Read more here.

RADIO & PODCAST:

Numeris and NLogic have announced that they are officially unifying under a singular brand. Going forward, the measurement agency and its insights arm will work together under the Numeris brand in a move to make its measurement, data, insights and solutions services accessible from a single source. The University of King’s College is establishing a Centre for Excellence in Podcasting and Audio Storytelling (CEPAS), with an eye to keeping their programs relevant. It will allow the Halifax university to expand what it says are “already in-demand” podcast offerings to include new certificate and micro-credential initiatives. The work of the centre will be informed by an expert advisory board. Read more here.

Rogers Sports & Media has tweaked its KiSS branded stations in B.C.’s Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley, replacing KiSS Throwbacks with KiSS West Coast. The “tweak” to the format adds more current Top 40 and Gold to the stations’ playlist, in addition to adding The Roz & Mocha Show in mornings.

Pulse 107.7 FM (CISF-FM) Surrey is launching new late-night sports show, Off the Rush. Co-hosted by Tanbir Rana and Brian Rai, alongside producer Karan Dhindsa, the two-hour program will air Monday through Friday. The show aims to bring a Vancouver and Lower Mainland perspective to stories spanning the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB and soccer, among other sports.

Leafs Talk won’t be returning to Sportsnet 590 The Fan (CJCL-AM) digital platforms, the Toronto Maple Leafs post-game show hosted by Sam McKee and J.D. Bunkis. Launched in 2021, cancellation of the podcast has generated a Change.org petition. Bunkis will continue to host The JD Bunkis Podcast.

Frankly Hockey, hosted by Frank Seravalli and John Buccigross, is now being simulcast daily on Sportsnet.ca and Sportsnet The Fan 590 (CJCL-AM). Seravalli is a former TSN hockey reporter, who more recently has been seen on Prime Video and Victory+.

SiriusXM Canada has announced its coverage plans for the 2026–27 NHL season, with SiriusXM NHL Network Radio (ch. 91) once again making every game available to subscribers via dedicated play-by-play channels. This season’s lineup includes Mike Johnson, Anthony Stewart, Martin Biron, Andrew Raycroft, Craig Button, Nate Thompson, Frankie Corrado, Tony Granato, and Jason Strudwick. Returning hosts and contributors include Gord Stellick, Scott Laughlin, Steve Kouleas, Mick Kern, Jake Hahn, Victoria Matiash, Brian Burke, Elliotte Friedman, Bruce Boudreau, and Dave Pagnotta.

Jinny Wong

Pro Bono Group is releasing a fresh Feed Ontario PSA this week. “Snack” replaces any current creative. ACTRA voice talent on the spot includes Paul Miller and Jinny Wong. 

Active for Life has launched a three-spot national PSA campaign for its ‘It’s Child’s Play‘ initiative. The national back-to-school campaign sends a message to parents that helping your kids play actively every day doesn’t have to be complicated. Data indicates only about a quarter of Canadian youth, aged 12-17, meet the recommended two-hour daily screen limit, and just one in five meet physical activity guidelines.

SIGN OFFS:

David MarsdenDavid Marsden, 85, on Sept. 25. Born in Toronto and raised in Stratford, Marsden’s interest in music and radio started early, with his first foray into radio at CFCO Chatham, which was followed by stints at CHLO St. Thomas, and then CKEY-AM Toronto under the on-air handle of “Dave Mickie.” He went on to appear on CBC-TV’s Music Hop and CHCH-TV’s Mickie A Go Go. In the late 1960s, he moved to Montreal’s CKGM-AM, where he first used the name David Marsden. From there, he made the move to CHOM-FM before returning to Toronto to work at CHUM-FM. He arrived at Brampton’s CFNY-FM in 1977 and was named Program Director two years later. After wrapping up his run at the groundbreaking station in 1988, Marsden brought “The Spirit of Radio” to the West Coast and Vancouver’s Coast 1040 (CKST-AM) in the early 1990s, before returning to Toronto to launch online radio hub, Iceberg Media. His final venture was online radio station, NYthespirit.com. Read more here.

Al Roos

Al Roos, 75, on Sept. 18 after a short battle with cancer. Roos started working with broadcast equipment manufacturer, McCurdy Radio, in 1972, installing stereo production consoles across North America, including NBC, ABC, CBS and CBC affiliates. He was doing an install at CKWS-FM and CFMK-FM Kingston in 1980 when he was offered a job at CKWS Radio and TV. He went on to work with Global Kingston for 39 years, retiring from Corus Entertainment  in 2022. His last project at Corus Kingston was rebuilding the two FM radio stations to enable the transition to all Wheatstone digital audio over IP during the pandemic. Roos was recognized with the 2022 Canadian Radio Award for Best Engineer (Medium Market).

Anne Claire Poirier

Anne Claire Poirier, 94, on Sept. 27. The National Film Board’s first francophone woman director and producer, Poirier made some of the most powerful films in Quebec cinema from 1960 to 1997. She obtained a law degree and studied at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique, before working for Radio-Canada and successively establishing herself as an actor, host and theatre critic. She joined NFB in 1960, starting out in Versions Services, before moving into editing and then directing in 1963 with documentary, 30 Minutes, Mister Plummer, on actor Christopher Plummer. In 1996, she made Tu as crié LET ME GO, an unflinching examination of the addiction and eventual murder of her own daughter, which won numerous awards. Poirier was appointed Chevalière de l’Ordre national du Québec, going on to become an Officière in 2008. In 1988, she received the Prix Albert-Tessier, the Quebec government’s highest distinction in cinema. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003.

TV & FILM:

CBC and PWHLCBC has announced that Hockey Night in Canada is embarking on a historic transformation as the broadcast returns for its 90th season anchored by live Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) games. Following the end of CBC’s sub-licensing agreement for NHL men’s hockey games earlier this year, the reimagined broadcast will serve as a featured sub-brand of CBC Sports Primetime, a new weekly Saturday evening sports program hosted by veteran broadcaster Andi Petrillo, launching Oct. 3, while Radio-Canada’s new weekly Sunday show Rendez-vous Podium (debuting Oct. 18) is helmed by Jacinthe Taillon. HNIC will provide comprehensive coverage for eight primetime PWHL games starting Dec. 5. Read more here.

PWHL All Star GameThe Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) will hold its first-ever standalone all-star event, the PWHL All-Star presented by Scotiabank, on March 7 at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, anchored by broadcast partnerships with multiple networks. The marquee four-team, 3-on-3 round-robin tournament will be broadcast to Canadian viewers in both official languages, with TSN handling English-language broadcasts and Radio-Canada delivering French-language coverage. In the U.S., Scripps Sports will air the event nationwide on ION. Read more here.

Crave original docuseries, All Heart: A Rugby Story, premieres Friday, Oct. 9, with all four, half-hour episodes available for streaming. From producer Boat Rocker Studios, the series offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Canadian women’s team and their journey through the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025. The series is set to be broadcast on TSN in the future. 

The 113th Grey Cup will be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary on Sunday, Nov. 15 with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT, broadcast live on TSN, CTV, RDS and Crave. Sarah McLachlan will perform the national anthem as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds return to Grey Cup for their final flight. Other performers include Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo and James Barker Band, with Riley Green headlining the Bud Light Grey Cup Halftime Show. 

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has released Ripple Effect, it’s annual report for the 2025–26 fiscal year. It shows that CMF invested $338.8M in 1,248 audiovisual and interactive digital media (IDM) projects, and an additional $6.7M in 103 industry initiatives designed to address critical needs in the industry. Those investments fuelled a record $1.93B in industry activity and generated nearly 17,000 full-time equivalent jobs.

Netflix will premiere SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of on Oct. 30. The doc, explores the rise and legacy of the iconic Canadian sketch comedy series through cast interviews and a Toronto reunion of comedy icons. 

Jo Alcorn

Home Network has kicked off production for Season 2 of Canadian Original series Rentovation [20×30] with an open casting call for renters looking to upgrade their space. Hosted by design expert Jo Alcorn. Season 2 is currently shooting in the GTA. The series is slated to premiere in 2027.

Longhope Media has partnered with KO Distribution – the sales arm of Canadian production house KOTV –  to develop English-language Canadian adaptations of two acclaimed Québec series: Radio-Canada comedy Temps de chien, produced by A Média, and ROMEO’s award-winning queer mystery Ayer’s Cliff. The deals come following KOTV receiving an Indiescreen Award during TIFF.

Canada Media Fund (CMF) CEO Valerie Creighton, former Cityline host Tracy Moore, and Prime Video exec Magda Grace, are among WIFT+ Toronto’s 2026 Crystal Awards honourees. Creighton, who has led CMF for two decades, is being recognized as an Innovation Trailblazer, while Moore will receive the Special Jury Award of Distinction. Grace, Head of Content Acquisition and Partnerships, International at Prime Video, will receive the International Achievement honour. Read more here.

The DGC has unveiled the nominees for the 2026 DGC Awards for Feature Film, Documentary and Short Film. By film, comedy-horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, leads nominations with three. Read more here.

UBCP/ACTRA has announced the nominees for its 2026 awards. Apple TV thriller Protectors of the Land leads nominations with four. Other multiple nominees include made for TV movie If I Run; Family Law; and short film, Never Use Alone.

Accent Aigu Entertainment (AAE), the producer of Crave’s global hit Heated Rivalry, is launching the Irina Foundation, a private independent fund dedicated to championing inclusivity and mental well-being. Established by AAE co-founders Jacob Tierney and Brendan Brady, the foundation aims to connect people through organized sports and arts programs, supporting organizations that create opportunities for LGBTQIA2S+ and underserved communities. REGULATORY, TELECOM & MEDIA:

The CRTC says it has “clearly heard” that Indigenous peoples need more opportunity to participate in the development of its new Indigenous Broadcasting Policy. To that end, it’s inviting Indigenous representation from the broadcasting sector to participate in a new joint working group that will help develop the new policy and make recommendations. That included presenting 10 2026 Lifetime Achievement Awards to Mark Dwyer, Director of News & Current Affairs at NTV in Newfoundland & Labrador; Joanne Clancy, longtime CTV Halifax Assistant News Director; Alec Gordon, host of CBC Inuktitut program, Tuttavik; CHCH-TV cameraman Duane Worth; retired CBC Radio journalist Robert Fisher; posthumous recognition for Toronto radio host Don Daynard; CTV Saskatoon weather specialist Jeff Rogstad and CTV Regina technical director Bruce Gellvear; Gerry Belec, who retired earlier this year as National Director of Technology and Operations at Global News; and Laura Lynch, the former host of CBC Radio’s What On Earth?. RTDNA Canada is inviting applications for its 2027 Future Journalists program until Dec. 15. Running from Feb. 1 – Nov. 1, 2027, it offers post-secondary journalism students a tour of CTV News headquarters and opportunity to shadow journalists; access to interview a veteran Canadian journalist of their choice; and the opportunity to volunteer at the RTDNA National Gala.

Investigative Journalism Foundation’s newest public interest database Paper Trail, allows users to see how many contracts a company or organization has won from the federal government in a single search, including how many sole-sourced contracts it’s been given, how many times it has lobbied government, and the full text of references to it in already-released Access to Information records. It’s the 14th database the foundation has built.

The BCIT School of Business + Media has redesigned its two-year Broadcast and Media Production programs to better prepare grads for an increasingly digital and creator-driven media industry. Beginning with the fall 2027 intake, students will be able to choose from three updated, full-time diploma programs: Digital Content Creation and Performance (formerly Radio Arts and Entertainment); Multimedia Journalism (formerly Broadcast and Online Journalism); and Television, Film, and Video (formerly Television and Video Production).
