Angela Valiant is no longer being heard in mornings on SONiC (CKKS-FM) Vancouver as Rogers Sports & Media continues making changes in Vancouver. Following the end of the Drex on JACK morning show on JACK FM (CJAX-FM) last week, Carly and Jay have announced their move from afternoons on SONiC to the afternoon drive slot on JACK. More lineup changes are expected to be revealed this week.
Kevin Brown, Managing Director / Director of Sales with Bayshore Broadcasting, will be “semi-retiring” at the end of August. Brown’s broadcasting career spans 44 years, beginning at CKCO-TV Kitchener in operations. He then moved over to CKNX-TV Wingham as a creative writer, producer and salesperson, before crossing over to CKNX Radio as General Sales Manager. Brown was then recruited by Bayshore to help expand their footprint throughout Ontario, working closely with Ross Kentner to win six new FM Licences. He’ll be continuing to consult for the foreseeable future. He’s also the current treasurer of the Ontario Association of Broadcasters (OAB).
Vanessa Wright is joining Global News in Durham as a videographer. For the last year, Wright has been working at Global Halifax as a Digital Broadcast Journalist. Raised in Toronto, she is a 2022 Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism and a minor in criminology. Her first day with Global Durham is May 27.
Tegan Versolatto has wrapped up her time at CTV Kitchener where she’d been a multimedia journalist and videographer since 2019. She’ll be joining the City of Kitchener as a Digital Media Strategist.
Prabhjot Kahlon is leaving OMNI Punjabi after more than 15 years as a reporter with the network. Based in Vancouver, Kahlon is leaving journalism to pursue a career in government communications.
Shannon Waters has joined The Narwhal as its B.C. Politics and Environment reporter. Waters arrives from Politics Today where she served as Editor-in-Chief for the past year. She’s also covered municipal politics for Victoria’s Capital Daily and served as News Director for Vista Radio’s Prince George stations in 2016-17.
Kenton Boston, the former Vice President of National and Network News at Global, has joined the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation as its President & CEO. Boston took a career break at the end of 2022 after a battle with cancer. He was with Global/Corus Entertainment for 17 years, following a decade as a writer and producer with CTV News.
John Shorthouse is making the television call for the first time during the Vancouver Canucks vs. Nashville Predators first round playoff series as he teams up with Dave Tomlinson in the booth. Shorthouse had previously called more than 100 playoff games, but never on a TV broadcast. Check out Sportsnet’s playoff play-by-play and analyst pairings here.
Aaron Sousa is departing CBC Edmonton after less than a year for a new opportunity. His last day with the public broadcaster is April 28. Sousa joined CBC last June as an associate producer and reporter, arriving from Acadia Broadcasting’s stations in Saint John, NB.
Ryan Cowley has left CBC/Radio-Canada after seven years and roles ranging from Communications Officer to Admin Specialist. Cowley is also an author, public speaker and podcaster as the host of All the Right Words: A Podcast for the Stuttering Community, which is in its second season.
Bryan Press is retiring after 40 years in Canadian media sales and management, the last nine as National Media Fundraising Director at NABS (National Advertising Benevolent Society). Press graduated from Ryerson’s Radio & TV (RTA) program in 1984 and began op’ing at 99.9 Toronto (CKFM-FM), before moving into sales at Radio TV Representatives (RTVR). He then worked in senior sales and management roles at Paul Mulvihill, Western Broadcast Sales, Alexander Pearson & Dawson (AP&D) and CHUM. During his tenure at CanWest Global, he played a pivotal role in the launch of Canwest Global Interactive (Globaltv.com). He also served as VP of Sales at Alliance Atlantis Communications. His last day at NABS is June 28.
Nick Bernard has joined the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) as Marketing & Communications Coordinator. Bernard has previously served as a creative writer for Durham Radio in Hamilton and Stingray in Edmonton.
Shannon Bennett has been appointed Legal/Privacy Counsel at Evanov Communications. Bennett, who has been with the company as in-house counsel since September 2022, assumes the new role effective immediately.
Mark Trachuk has been appointed to the role of General Counsel at WildBrain and Corporate Secretary to its Board of Directors. Based in Toronto, Trachuk succeeds James Bishop in the role, who has joined High Liner Foods. Prior to WildBrain, Trachuk served as counsel at Norton Rose Fulbright where he practiced corporate and securities law. From 2018 to 2020, he was Worldwide Group General Counsel & Corporate Secretary for Entertainment One and part of the executive team that conducted the sale of eOne to Hasbro.
RADIO & PODCAST:
CKUA Radio has had a strong start to an urgent fundraising campaign to keep the donor-funded station on the air. An Alberta institution for the past 96 years and the country’s oldest public and educational broadcaster, the Edmonton station says its future is at risk “due to a perfect storm of rising inflationary pressures, limited government funding, the vacancy and devaluation of Edmonton’s downtown office real estate market, and post-pandemic realities.” CKUA says it needs to raise $3 million by the end of September. After launching its Spring fundraising campaign on Friday afternoon, listeners had already donated more than $850,000 by Monday morning and surpassed the $1M mark on Tuesday. Read more here.
91.3 FM CJTR Regina Community Radio’s membership has voted overwhelmingly in favour of transferring ownership of the station to Access Communications Co-operative. Facing financial hardship, CJTR has been looking for an alternative operating model. Serving Regina since 2001, the station is almost entirely volunteer run, with two staff and 80 programmers creating 60 shows and 5,000 hours of original programming annually. CJTR’s staff will be joining Access Communications. The next steps will see Access apply to the CRTC for approval of the ownership transfer and obtain a community broadcast license. In the meantime, the station will continue to broadcast under its current licence.
Sports 1440 (CKJR-AM) Edmonton will debut TURN Sports from The Universal Radio Network on Wednesday, May 1. Broadcasting weeknights from 6 – 9 p.m., TURN Sports will offer a blend of local and international sports coverage, including basketball, hockey, soccer, football, cricket, baseball, and more. It’s hosted by Navin Ramharak, the Edmonton creator behind the Brown Ballers sports media platform for brown athletes. Stingray says with the show’s launch, Sports 1440 becomes a full-time sports destination, broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Stingray’s Q104 (CFRQ-FM) Halifax launched its HD Radio broadcast on March 18, introducing HD Radio to the Maritimes. In late 2023, the station engaged with Nautel to discuss replacing Q104’s aging transmitter and the possibility of incorporating HD Radio. Nautel embraced the chance to debut their new Radio-Airchain technology, an all-in-one solution that garnered a “Best in Show” award at NAB Show. As the inaugural station to adopt the technology, Q104 has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with Nautel, given its proximity to their Nova Scotia headquarters. The station’s collaboration with Quu and Xperi aims to enrich the HD Radio experience for listeners, complete with album artwork and enhanced visuals for programs like Rock of The Atlantic.
91.7 Giant FM’s (CIXL-FM) Welland, ON Cash FX jackpot has grown to nearly $12,000, resulting in numerous misdials to other businesses as listeners frantically attempt to be lucky caller number 10. The contest, which is currently running five times a day and grows by $100 with each wrong guess, is now the largest radio cash prize in Niagara region history. ACTRA Toronto handed out the 22nd ACTRA Awards on Monday night at the Palais Royale. CBC and HBO Max series Sort Of took this year’s coveted Members’ Choice Series Ensemble Award, while the 2024 Award of Excellence was presented to veteran television actress Maria del Mar, known for her recurring roles in Blue Murder and Street Legal. Jason Loftus’ Eternal Spring is up for a Peabody Award in the Documentary category. The animated doc is based on the animation of Chinese artist Daxiong and centers around Falun Gong’s 2002 hijacking of broadcast TV stations in Changchun, and China’s continued repression of ethnic and religious minority groups. Eternal Spring has received numerous awards, including the Grand Jury Award at last year’s BANFF Rockies International Program Competition. Ariel Nasr is the recipient of this year’s TIFF–CBC Films Screenwriter Award for his screenplay Daudistan. As part of the award, he’ll receive $15,000 along with support from a script consultant and access to the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and TIFF Industry Conference. Nasr is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and producer whose films include The Forbidden Reel (2019), The Boxing Girls of Kabul (2011), Buzkashi Boys (2012), Good Morning Kandahar (2009), and La Mosquée (2018). He currently serves as a documentary producer at NFB.
The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada has announced that award-winning actress, writer, director and producer Devery Jacobs will receive the Impact Award at this year’s inaugural Canadian event in Toronto on May 30. The award is being presented to Jacobs in partnership with the Indigenous Screen Office. Jacobs is currently starring in new Marvel series Echo, which launched on Disney+ earlier this year. She also recently voiced the character “Kahhori” in Marvel’s What If….? series, the franchise’s first Indigenous-Mohawk superhero.
The Banff World Media Festival (BANFF) has announced more industry leaders set to headline the 45th edition of the festival, June 9–12, at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Key sessions include In Conversation With Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, who’ll speak about the network’s 2024/25 programming strategy, the art of building procedural franchises and CBS’ role in the evolving TV ecosystem. Disrupt or Be Disrupted: The Media Industry in the Age of Enshittification will feature Adam Cunningham, Chief Strategy Officer, Allied Global Marketing, who’ll tackle the gradual decline into irrelevance faced by media platforms that fail to evolve with their audience. BANFF says this year, international financing and co-production will be a major focus. The festival will also debut new conference content focused on music on screen.
Telefilm Canada has released its strategic and corporate plan through 2027. The Crown agency says it will bring its vision to fruition over the next three years through a series of measurable initiatives based on three strategic priorities, including conducting a strategic review of programs and initiatives to maximize impact on the industry and public; evolving its organizational culture to optimize operational efficiency; and playing a leading role in helping modernize the audiovisual sector.
DGC Ontario has launched the Sustainable Futures Material Reuse Project, a circular economy program spearheaded by the DGC Ontario Sustainability Committee. The initiative provides a solution for leftover production materials by putting them into the hands of film students at schools like York University, Sheridan, Centennial and Humber Colleges, reducing unnecessary waste and ushering in a brighter and greener future for the next generation of filmmakers. The Black Screen Office (BSO) has announced two new programs: the BSO Office Hours program, a one-on-one mentorship initiative designed specifically for Black Canadians seeking to enter or advance their careers in the world of film, television, and digital media; and the Black Producer Accelerator Program, in partnership with Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA), focused on increasing representation and supporting the career growth of Black producers in Canada. The program, made possible with financial support from Entertainment Partners, will see six producers participate in 20-week paid mentorship placements, where they will be paired with established producers at CMPA member companies. The application deadline is May 3.
Michelle Mama and Bill Taylor have launched boutique production company Gay Agenda, with an aim to foster, mentor, and produce from a defiantly queer lens, and discover and amplify the next generation of queer voices. Gay Agenda is currently in production on feature-length documentary AntiDiva: The Confessions of Carole Pope, slated for release in 2025 on CBC Documentary Channel. It’s also developing That’s Just Super (8×30), a queer superhero series created by Julianna Notten (Erin’s Guide to Kissing Girls) and co-showrun by veteran writer Anthony Q. Farrell (The Office, Shelved).
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and CBC/Radio-Canada have launched their joint campaign for the Olympic Games Paris 2024, titled “Brave is Unbeatable.” The campaign aims to rally Canadians behind Team Canada ahead of Paris 2024 by telling the stories of athletes and their paths to the Olympic Games, including navigating anxiety, getting cut from their high school teams, or coping with pressure. Those featured include Ellie Black (Halifax, NS) – Artistic Gymnastics; Maude Charron (Rimouski, Que.) – Weightlifting; Andre De Grasse (Markham, ON) – Athletics; Justina Di Stasio (Coquitlam, BC) – Wrestling; Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Hamilton, ON) – Basketball; Hugo Houle (Sainte-Perpétue, Que.) – Cycling; Philip “Phil Wizard” Kim (Vancouver) – Breaking; Maggie Mac Neil (London, ON) – Swimming; and Skylar Park (Winnipeg) – Taekwondo. The campaign is narrated by in English by Michael J. Fox, and in French by Céline Dion. It was conceived in conjunction with Montreal and Toronto agency, The Hive.
Corus Entertainment’s Geek Girl (10×30) debuts May 30 exclusively on STACKTV in Canada. Based on the best-selling YA novel by British author Holly Smale, the live-action adaptation is a co-production between Aircraft Pictures and RubyRock Pictures, with creative support from Nelvana. The series was filmed in the UK and Ottawa last summer. Following its premiere on STACKTV, Geek Girl will air on YTV in Canada this September.
Crave confirms its hit original series SHORESY returns for a six-episode, third season on Friday, May 24 with two new episodes, and a new episode dropping on subsequent Fridays. Created by and starring Jared Keeso, and produced by New Metric Media in association with Play Fun Games, SHORESY sees the fan favourite character and the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs of the Northern Ontario Senior Hockey Organization (The NOSHO), continue their quest to never lose again.
AMI will debut Season 1 of The Squeaky Wheel: Canada on Monday, June 24. Based on Steven Verdile’s web publication The Squeaky Wheel and produced by Hitsby Entertainment, the eight-episode satirical, half-hour news format pokes fun at the ableist society people with disabilities face every day. Directed by Lucy Belgum and Tobi Abdul, the series is anchored by Graham Kent and Gaitrie Persaud with the ensemble cast featuring Margaret Rose, Samantha Wyss, Sivert Das, Wesley Magee-Saxton and Yousef Kadoura.
Pluto TV is doubling down on South Park’s success on the platform, offering viewers an entire South Park category with multiple channels dedicated to the fan-favorite series. The “South Park” category will include a “South Park” main channel, available across all international markets, as well as a series of South Park themed channels in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Latin America and Australia, featuring a selection of South Park episodes dedicated to the theme of the month. In Canada specifically, channels now streaming include: South Park (current channel); South Park: Armageddon! (themed pop-up channel); South Park: Cartman Collection; South Park: Kenny Collection; South Park: Kyle Collection; South Park: Stan Collection; and South Park FR (French channel).
Pluto TV has announced that DesiPlay TV is now streaming in Canada. Viacom18’s DesiPlay TV is the first FAST Hindi General Entertainment Channel to launch on Pluto TV in Canada, featuring Indian stories, Hindi shows and Bollywood movies. Favourite Desi TV shows are also available to watch with English subtitles.
CHEK has announced Donnie and Dhali – The Team will host a post game edition of their show on game nights during the Vancouver Canucks playoff run. Don Taylor, Rick Dhaliwal and producer Ryan Henderson will host a one-hour live show, which will air on CHEK and stream on CHEK+ and YouTube following each game. The post-game show will also be available to download as a podcast. The regular Donnie and Dhali – The Team program will continue to air Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to noon live on CHEK and CHEK+.
Air Canada has announced the addition of three new live TV sports channels to its in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. Sportsnet ONE and Sportsnet East are now available with TVA Sports to start in May. Air Canada’s satellite-connected offering also includes TSN and RDS, CTV News Channel, LCN, and BNN Bloomberg. Live TV is currently available on select domestic and transborder routes.
Vividata has released its latest Study of the Canadian Consumer for Spring 2024. In field from January to December last year, among its findings are that almost half of Canadians report regularly watching TV and movies together as a family. According to the data release, 38% will actively seek out content they can watch together, climbing to 44% for parents. Compared to the average Canadian adult, parents with kids under 12 spend less weekly time with TV (15 hrs. vs 19 hrs.) and streaming (10 hrs. vs 12 hrs.), but are 27% more likely to watch video content online or via streaming service, with almost 85% having streamed in the past month. Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ are their most popular streaming services, with about 20% of Netflix and Disney+ users reporting they watch with ads.

Madison Tevlin is the People’s Voice Winner for Best Creator, Social and Best Influencer at The Webby Awards. Represented by Same Page Talent, Tevlin – the Canadian actress and media personality is best known for her role in 2023 feature film Champions and her CBC Gem talk show Who Do You Think I Am? – won for “Down Syndrome is the Least Interesting Thing About Me.” Boutique Vancouver creative studio Kelly&Kelly was also recognized with a People’s Voice honour for Supreme: The Battle for Roe in the Podcasts, Scripted (Fiction) category. REGULATORY, TELECOM & MEDIA:
Rogers Communications has announced a 10-year agreement with Comcast that will see its Entertainment OS and 10G internet connectivity technology introduced in Canada. Currently in use by SKY, Foxtel and XUMO, Entertainment OS is designed to provide a seamless user experience across multiple devices, promising “less searching and more watching” with intuitive navigation features, aggregating live TV and subscriptions into a single user destination. In addition to the introduction of a new device powered by Entertainment OS, the partnership also includes broadband and smart home tech, and an expanded suite of home security products developed by Comcast and Xfinity. The announcement came at the company’s Annual General Meeting where Q1 2024 results were highlighted by total revenue and total service revenue increases of 28% and 31%, respectively, driven by revenue growth in Rogers’ Cable and Wireless business. Media revenue decreased by 5% in the quarter primarily as a result of lower subscriber revenue, and lower revenue at Today’s Shopping Choice, partially offset by higher ad revenue. Read more here.
Stingray Radio President Steve Jones says he’s still hopeful issues the federal budget “fell far short” on can be addressed outside the budget process. Earlier this year, Stingray and a coalition of 20 independent broadcasters, appealed for a greater share of the $86M federal advertising spend to go to local media. Jones says there was no movement in the budget on the four key asks that independent broadcasters are seeking, including: eliminating the tax-deductibility of advertising purchased on foreign-owned, internet-delivered media sites and services; extending the Canadian journalism labour tax credit to broadcast news organizations; prioritizing and supporting Canadian-owned media by dedicating 70% of the Government of Canada’s advertising expenditures to local radio, TV, print, and Canadian-owned digital media; and tying any increase in funding to CBC/Radio-Canada to the public broadcaster’s exit from the advertising market. The BC Association of Broadcasters (BCAB) has announced several additions to its May 7th conference lineup, including representation from the CRTC, Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), ThinkTV, Radio Connects, NLogic, Environics Analytics, and more. Set to take place at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, previously-announced speakers include broadcast veteran George Stroumboulopoulos, who is featured in this year’s “Conversation with a Legend.” The 102.1 the Edge (CFNY-FM), MuchMusic and Hockey Night in Canada alum will sit down with Rock 101 (CFMI-FM) morning show host Willy Percy. Sonia Sunger of Global News is also set to moderate a panel discussion exploring how legacy industries can evolve recruitment, talent pipelines and employee growth & development. Read more here.
The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) has announced its shortlists for the CJF Jackman Awards for Excellence in Journalism, honouring news organizations that embody exemplary journalism and have a profound positive impact on the communities they serve; and the Landsberg Award, celebrating a journalist or journalists enhancing awareness of women’s equality issues. All finalists’ story submissions are available on CJF’s Awards page. The winners will be announced at the CJF Awards ceremony on June 12 at the Royal York Hotel.
MTM Newcomers latest report Hold the Phone – Newcomers and Cellphones finds close to three in five newcomers acquired their cellphone after arriving in Canada (57%). Older newcomers are more likely to have done so after arriving in Canada than their younger counterparts (44% among those aged 18-24 vs. 66% of those 45+). Newcomers are more likely to perform online activities on their cellphones, overwhelmingly turning to the device with the exception of watching TV and movies on SVOD services, which they also do often on a computer (57% watch via a smartphone vs. 51% on a computer).
BROADCAST TECH & ENGINEERING:
NAB Show says nearly 1,300 exhibitors from 41 countries showcased this year, including more than 200 first-time exhibitors. Nearly 200 exhibitors displayed AI/Machine learning tools and tech, while more than 150 sessions featuring AI and nearly 100 sessions about the creator economy. NAB says a staggering 54% of the more than 61,000 projected registered attendees experienced the event for the first time. More than a quarter of attendees (27%, up two per cent from last year) were international, representing 163 countries, with 10 first-time delegations attending from Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, Oceana and Central Asia. WABE’s theme this year is “Forging Ahead In Media’s New Landscape” as the organization gets set to welcome the broadcast tech industry to Edmonton’s ICE District, Sept. 23-25. “In an ever-evolving environment where technology continues to shape and redefine how we consume and interact with media, it is crucial that we come together to explore the latest trends, strategies, and tools that will drive us forward,” writes WABE President Tessa Potter in her April column. NLogic has announced the upcoming launch of Video Planner, a cross-platform reach/frequency calculator built on Numeris’ Video Audience Measurement (VAM) dataset. Aimed at helping agencies, broadcasters streaming platforms, advertisers, and ad tech companies estimate reach and optimize their video campaign platform mix, NLogic says Video Planner will allow users to analyze and plan unduplicated reach and frequency across the Canadian video landscape, inclusive of TV, streaming, and social platforms. Video Planner will launch in early summer, estimating reach and frequency across total video, including linear stations, station groups, BVOD (Broadcast Video On Demand), pure play streamers, as well as social and digital video.
