REVOLVING DOOR:

Charles Adler

Charles Adler is no longer being heard on the Corus Radio network in Western Canada. For the last five years, Adler had been hosting weeknight show “Charles Adler Tonight.” Adler, 67, started his broadcast career at the McGill University campus station in 1973. He’s been hosting talk radio off and on since the late 1990s and has been a national radio host on the Corus network for the better part of the last 15 years.

Michael Campbell

Michael Campbell’s network show “MoneyTalks” has also been cancelled by Corus Radio. The veteran host and business analyst has announced he’s transitioning to an “uncensored” YouTube channel. Corus says Charles Adler’s 7-10 p.m. weekday time slot will continue to be filled with a nationally-focused, network talk program with a new host to be confirmed. The 980 CKNW Vancouver weekend morning show is being extended until 9 a.m. on Saturdays, with Corus Radio to debut a new, national-news-focused roundtable show from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays.

 

Craig MacEwan

 

Craig MacEwan, the program director at Sportsnet 650 (CISL-AM) Vancouver, is leaving Rogers Sports & Media to join the Vancouver Canucks organization as their Director of Communications. MacEwan has been in his current role since 2017, in addition to a prior 14-year stint with Sportsnet in which he served as Pacific Bureau Chief, as well as a reporter, anchor and play-by-play host. 

Paul O’Neil

Paul O’Neil is joining Harvard Broadcasting as Play 107 (CKPW-FM) Edmonton’s Midday Host and Music Director. O’Neil was most recently with Corus Entertainment where he was Hub Music Director for Corus Hot AC stations across the country for eight years. O’Neil succeeds Jonny Jazzno in the role, starting Aug. 30.

Jocelyn Martin

Jocelyn Martin is moving on from 107.5 Kool FM (CKMB-FM) and Rock 95 (CFJB-FM) Barrie. Martin has been with the Central Ontario Broadcasting stations since 2015 as a weekend host and music director.

Heather Seaman

Heather Seaman has announced her departure from 105.9 The Region (CFMS-FM) Markham, ON. She has yet to reveal where she’s headed. Seaman has been with the station since February, following layoffs at Bell Media where she’d been anchoring for Newstalk 1010 (CFRB-AM).

Marc Smith

Marc Smith has filed his last story for CTV Regina. Smith joined the station as a video journalist in 2019 after 11 years as a sports and news reporter for Golden West Broadcasting’s stations in Moose Jaw.

Katie Scott

Katie Scott is joining ET Canada as a producer. Scott was formerly an entertainment writer for GlobalNews.ca. She’s also been a contributor to CTV’s Etalk and Yahoo Canada.

Shetu Modi

Shetu Modi is joining ET Canada as a video editor. Modi was a longtime video producer and editor with The Canadian Press, based in Toronto. Also an independent filmmaker, her last role was with Verizon Media, producing and editing for HuffPost and Yahoo Canada

Floyd Blackhorse

Floyd Blackhorse is joining the CBC Indigenous Unit as a reporter covering stories in Alberta. He’ll be based in Calgary. A 2021 Mount Royal University Journalism graduate, Blackhorse has previously reported for The Calgary Journal.

Ashleigh Stewart

Ashleigh Stewart has joined CBC News Toronto as a reporter. Formerly based in Abu Dhabi and New Zealand, Stewart has most recently been a freelance writer with experience as a culture and online editor for The National UAE and Christchurch, NZ daily newspaper, The Press.

Hailey Montgomery

Hailey Montgomery is joining the digital team at CTV News Toronto. Montgomery has previously done stints with The Globe and Mail’s Audience Growth department, Metroland Media, and the Telegraph-Journal in Saint John, NB.

Jayden Jhutti

Jayden Jhutti is joining Global BC as a writer. The recent BCIT Journalism graduate previously interned at CBC Vancouver.

Stephen Wentzell

Stephen Wentzell is joining rabble.ca as a National Politics staff reporter ahead of the federal election. Wentzell has previously worked as an anchor and producer at News 95.7 (CJNI-FM) Halifax and contributed to the Nova Scotia Advocate, among other publications.

 

Narcity has made a number of new hires. Imaan Sheikh will be leading the Toronto team as the new Editor for Narcity Canada. Sheikh was previously Culture Editor at The Juggernaut and is a former BuzzFeed staff writer. Sarah Rohoman joins Narcity as a staff writer after years at Yahoo Canada. Jackie Vandinther joins the Video team as Supervising Producer. She was previously with CTV News and CTVNews.ca. Sierra Riley joins as an Associate Editor in the Studio team. Riley was previously an Editor for Mimp Magazine. Emily Silva joins the Trending team as Associate Editor. She was previously a writer and reporter at CTV News Kitchener. Noemi Lopez and Alexander Riley join Narcity’s Campaigns’ team as Client Success Specialists. Lopez arrives from Level Six, while Riley departs the Toronto Star. Charlotte Lecomte also joins the Media Sales team as a Client Partner in Quebec. She was previously a Sales Coordinator for Bell Media and TV5 in Montreal.

Richard Yoon

Redline Communications Group has announced the appointment of Richard Yoon as President and CEO and as a director, effective Sept. 13. Most recently, Yoon served as CEO of ZTE Canada, a global manufacturer of network and terminal equipment in the wireless telecommunications market. 

Raila Gutman

Raila Gutman is joining the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) as Director, Member Development, BC Producers Branch. She’ll oversee CMPA-BC industry partnerships, inclusion initiatives, and training and professional development activities for members, including international and export initiatives. Prior to the CMPA, Gutman served as the inaugural Program Director for the Pacific Screenwriting Program (PSP), co-founded by CMPA-BC, Netflix and Creative BC in 2018, and previously served as a Marketing Director at Corus Entertainment. She’ll be based out of the CMPA’s Vancouver office and report to Tracey Friesen, Managing Vice-President of CMPA-BC. Gutman succeeds Linda Hay who held the role for the last four years.

RADIO & PODCAST:

Vista Radio will re-launch CJFB-FM Bolton, ON on Sept. 3 at 102.7 FM on the dial. The station is currently testing with the format, brand and on-air lineup to be revealed at launch. Vista has owned the community/tourist information station since 2012 when it acquired Haliburton Broadcasting. It received a third and final extension from the CRTC in April 2020 to relocate CJFB-FM from 105.5 MHz to 102.7 MHz and increase the power from 50 to 1,100 watts. The station currently plays a mix of adult contemporary, country and pop music, along with local news, sports, and weather. 

 

 

SiriusXM and TikTok have partnered to launch TikTok Radio (ch. 4), a music channel featuring trending sounds from the short-form social video app that continues to see epic growth with three billion installs globally. The new channel, available to SiriusXM subscribers in both vehicles and to stream, is being billed as a radio version of the platform’s “For You” feed. Among the creators signed up to participate are Billy (@8illy), Cat Haley (@itscathaley), HINDZ (@hindzsight), Lamar Dawson (@dirrtykingofpop), and Taylor Cassidy (@taylorcassidyj), who’ll present music and share stories behind what’s trending each hour from viral hits to throwbacks and emerging TikTok talent. The launch of the channel speaks to TikTok’s ability to influence interest in music made popular by its use by creators. Among the artists that can thank TikTok for a streaming revival of past hits are Jack Johnson, Fleetwood Mac, and Mother Mother, with the app increasingly relied on to break new music. Fireside Canada: A Podcast About Canadian Legends, Lies and Lore is now part of Rogers Sports & Media’s Frequency Podcast Network. Hosted by British Columbian David Williams, the podcast focuses on both the storytelling and historical aspects of folklore, with each episode including a creative retelling or inspired story as well as analysis of its history and cultural significance. The remastered first season will drop on the network this Friday, followed by a new second season in late October.

JAZZ.FM91 (CJRT-FM) Toronto, in partnership with the Pat and Tony Adams Freedom Fund for the Arts, are launching new outreach program Discover Women in Jazz. The program promotes, champions and inspires women’s contributions to jazz as musicians, writers and bandleaders. The program’s first cohort will feature five musicians from the Greater Toronto Area selected by a panel that includes Colleen Allen (Musician, Educator), Josh Grossman (Artistic Director), Céline Peterson (Producer, Artist Representation), Dione Taylor (Singer, Songwriter), Aline Homzy (Musician, Composer, Educator) and Huma Uster (Operations Manager). The first group of women selected include Toronto-based vocalist-composer Mingjia Chen, bassist and composer Reknee Harrett, artist and educator Joy Lapps-Lewis, Korean-Canadian keyboardist and sound designer Yunjin Claire Lee, and R&B/pop artist Erez Zobary. JAZZ.FM91 will offer support, space, funding and marketing to foster their careers. All five concerts in the series will be broadcast in September.

SIGN OFFS:

Lisa Laco

Lisa Laco, 64, on Aug. 20, after a battle with ALS. Best known for her 23-year run hosting Superior Morning (formerly The Great Northwest) on CBC Thunder Bay, Laco arrived in Northwestern Ontario in 1992 after producing the CBC morning show in St. John’s and Corner Brook, NL. Laco retired from CBC Thunder Bay on Dec. 31, following her ALS diagnosis. A bursary has been established in her name. Donations can be made to the Lisa Laco Bursary Fund at the Northern Nishnawbe Education Council.

John Bartrem

John Bartrem, 90, on Aug. 13, in Oakville, ON. Born in Montreal in 1931, Bartrem was one of the original Mad Men working at Foster Advertising in Montreal. He transitioned into a broadcast career in the mid-1970s when he was hired by CJAD 800 and CJFM-FM Montreal as General Sales Manager. He went on to work with W1310 (CKOY-AM) and CKBY Ottawa in the mid-1980s and later Country 59 in Toronto, prior to his retirement in the 1990s.

 

TV & FILM:

Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) staff, audience members and visitors entering TIFF festival venues, Sept. 9-18, will be required to either show proof they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or that they have tested negative for the virus within 48 hours prior to entering any TIFF venue. Masks will also be required. There will be no printed tickets or passes with access to all TIFF Festival venues requiring a mobile ticket. There will also be no rush ticketing or lineups at any TIFF venues and no concessions sold at indoor venues. Drive-ins are the exception.

Rupi Kaur

Amazon Prime Video has announced Rupi Kaur Live as its fifth Canadian original. The Indian-Canadian poet will be featured in the one-hour special described as a “distinctive fusion of poetry, humor, spoken word, music and compelling visuals inspired by her poetry collections.” It will stream on Prime Video in North America, starting Friday, Aug. 27.

CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada’s Paralympic network, will air more than 120 original hours of Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games coverage on television, plus almost 1,500 hours of live streaming coverage via the CBC Sports app, CBC Gem, and CBC.ca/tokyo2020; the Radio-Canada Sports app and Radio-Canada.ca/jeux-paralympiques; as well as paralympic.ca/tokyo-2020. Hosted by Scott Russell, CBC’s broadcast schedule features three live shows per day, Monday-Saturday: Paralympic Primetime, Paralympic Late Night and Paralympic Afternoon, with daytime and evening shows airing on Sundays. Four-time Paralympic medallist Summer Mortimer joins Russell in-studio as a special analyst for select events, with CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux is the reporter on the ground in Tokyo. Broadcast partners Sportsnet and AMI will also offer regular coverage of key competitions. Described video will be offered on all CBC Daytime and Prime Time television coverage, and on the simulcast digital live-streams of live broadcasts, provided by Descriptive Video Works.

Sangita Patel

Entertainment Tonight Canada is expanding with a newly greenlit hour-long weekend edition of the show, ET Canada Weekend hosted by Sangita Patel. Airing Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. on Global, ET Canada Weekend premieres Sept. 18. The show will also stream live and on demand on STACKTV and the Global TV App. Patel will also continue to serve as an entertainment reporter for ET Canada weeknights on Global. ET Canada premieres its 17th season Tuesday, Sept. 7, airing weeknights at 7:30 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT.

Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) raised more than CAD $183.27 million during its seventh biennial television fundraising special on Saturday, Aug. 21 in Canada and the U.S. Funding raised from the show as well as corporate, foundation and individual donors supports research and breakthrough cancer treatments, in addition to public awareness campaigns. The celebrity-fueled event has raised over CAD $955 million since it was established in 2008.

Bilal Baig

Abacus Media Rights has secured sales for CBC/HBO MAX Original comedy series Sort Of (8 x 30), due to premiere in Canada on CBC Gem and CBC TV in November, and in the U.S. on HBO Max this fall. Produced by Sienna Films, the series, which has been selected for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and Series Mania, where it will have its world premiere as part of the International Panorama lineup, has sold to Sky (UK), Stan (Australia), M6-Téva (France) and the Nordic Entertainment Group (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Poland and the Baltic countries), with more deals in the pipeline. The series is created by Bilal Baig (Acha Bacha) and Fab Filippo (Save Me), who also serve as showrunners and executive producers. Baig stars as a fluid millennial who straddles various identities as the youngest child in a large Pakistani family. 

Hollywood Suite has acquired award-winning Go Button Media documentary, No Roses on a Sailor’s Grave. Slated for its broadcast premiere Nov. 11, the documentary tells the story of a lost WWII ship and how two strangers, a last remaining survivor of the wreck and a young archeologist, recovered the vessel from forgotten history more than 70 years after it disappeared. CBC & Radio-Canada Distribution have taken the worldwide rights for the documentary (excluding Canada) and will soon announce its launch into the global market.

Hollywood Suite premieres original docuseries Relentless: The Kevin Porter Story on Sept. 21. In the four-part series, filmmaker Ryan Mains follows Ontario-based paramedic and firefighter Kevin Porter for over five years as he pursues his lifelong dream of playing professional hockey in his 40s. Against the backdrop of a chorus of naysayers and COVID-19 limitations that restrict his ability to train, the series features interviews with former pro hockey players Jim Thomson, Frank Littlejohn and David Ling. It will air, starting with two back-to-back episodes, followed by the final two episodes Sept. 28. The entire series will be available on Hollywood Suite On Demand, starting Sept. 1. 

Anthony Shim

Riceboy Sleeps, the latest film from director, writer and actor Anthony Shim has started production in and around Vancouver. The film stars Ethan Hwang (The Umbrella Academy), Hunter Dillon (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Deadpool 2), Shim (Star Trek Beyond, The Man in the High Castle) and newcomer Choi Seung Yoon. Inspired by Shim’s childhood, The Canada/Korea production follows the story of a Korean single mother and her adolescent son living as immigrants in North America in the ‘90s. Shim’s sophomore feature film, his award-winning debut feature, Daughter, premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2019 and travelled the festival circuit before being picked up by CBC Gem in Canada and Amazon Prime in the U.S.

Smithsonian Channel looks at the guts and bolts of the world’s most innovative, multi-million dollar machines to spotlight the everyday hardhat heroes who oversee their operation in new original series, Impossible Repairs (6×60’). Hosted by filmmaker, adventurer, and survivalist Mike Davidson, the six-part series introduces audiences to an elite team of mechanics, engineers and technicians. Impossible Repairs will debut in Canada and the U.S. on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Smithsonian Channel in Canada is also available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ where Impossible Repairs will stream simultaneously.

Global’s fall schedule adds four new scripted dramas to its schedule, including new Global Original series Family Law, premiering Sept. 17. Viewers will get a special preview of the premiere episode Sept. 16. On Sept. 21, executive producer Dick Wolf brings viewers a three-hour FBI franchise event, capping off the night with the series premiere of FBI: International. In a two-night premiere event, NCIS: Hawai’i, starring Vanessa Lachey as the first female lead in the long-running franchise, premieres Sunday, Sept. 26, with episode two airing Monday, Sept. 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT in the show’s regular time slot. Lastly, the sequel to CSI: Crime Scene Investigation begins a brand-new chapter with CSI: Vegas premiering Wednesday, Oct. 6. Global’s comedy slate welcomes the previously announced Ghosts, a new single-camera comedy based on the British comedy of the same name, premiering Thursday, Oct. 7, followed by the sophomore season of Chuck Lorre comedy United States of Al, also premiering Thursday, Oct. 7.

Showcase’s fall line-up begins with the series conclusion of Supergirl, with the final season returning as of Aug. 24. Peacock Original series, Dr. Death is set to premiere Sunday, Sept. 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Based on Wondery’s hit podcast, Dr. Death is inspired by the true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community. Following the show’s season finale on Sunday, Oct. 31, viewers can tune into Dr. Death: The Undoctored Story, the first docuseries about Duntsch, told by those who survived it. Drama thriller, Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol, premieres Monday, Oct. 11. Based on Brown’s bestselling thriller “The Lost Symbol,” the series follows the early adventures of Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Ashley Zukerman, Succession). Also new is Chucky, premiering Tuesday, Oct. 19, which sees an idyllic American town thrown into chaos after a vintage “Good Guy” doll turns up at a suburban yard sale. Returning series include The Sinner (Season 4), Batwoman (Season 3), Legacies (Season 4), and All American (Season 4).

Food Network Canada premieres Peacock Original series Top Chef Family Style on Sept. 16 as part of its fall lineup. The new series sees 13 culinary prodigies sharpen their knives to compete with an adult family member. The series is hosted by Grammy-winner Meghan Trainor with best-selling cookbook author Marcus Samuelsson serving as head judge. Food Network Canada’s Halloween event kicks off with Halloween Baking Championship (3×120, 4×60), on Sept. 13. The following Sunday, Road to Halloween Wars (1×60) premieres Sept. 19 ahead of the new season of Halloween Wars (7×60) at 9 p.m. ET/PT with new host and paranormal investigator Zak Bagans at the helm. Beginning Sept. 27, Corus Studios’ baking competition series The Big Bake: Halloween (5×60) debuts. Rounding out the schedule is a new season of carving competition series Outrageous Pumpkins returning Oct. 3, with host Alyson Hannigan.

Mary Berg

CTV Life Channel has announced new original culinary series Mary Makes It Easy, airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, beginning Sept. 6. Hosted by two-time Canadian Screen Award winner Mary Berg, the new series is filmed on location in Toronto in her home kitchen where Berg shares step-by-step recipes and other tips aimed at leaving viewers with confidence to overcome their own culinary challenges. 

Mary Mammoliti

Mary Mammoliti’s latest project for Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) is Dish with Mary, which will see the partially-sighted food blogger and host paired in a home cook-along with Canadian chefs. While Mammoliti is based in Toronto, guest chefs will connect with her from across the country via video technology. Dish with Mary debuts Sept. 16 on AMI-tv with episodes available to stream on AMI.ca and the AMI-tv App.

The Youth Media Alliance (YMA) is looking for a Canadian student at the university or college level who shows talent and passion for creating innovative children’s content. One outstanding Canadian student planning to pursue a career in children’s television or digital media production will be selected to receive the YMA Andra Sheffer Scholarship, which enables the recipient to attend the Kidscreen Summit in Miami, the Banff World Media Festival, and access mentorship resources. ONLINE & DIGITAL MEDIA:

Knowledge Network, British Columbia’s viewer-supported public broadcaster is introducing its Knowledge Kids app and knowledgekids.ca website to the rest of Canada. Both showcase a wide range of curated, commercial-free shows and content, geared to kids ages two to eight. The fall lineup features favourites like Paw Patrol, Wild Kratts, Shaun the Sheep and Clifford the Big Red Dog, as well as new shows like Gus the Itsy Bitsy Knight, Dog Loves Books, Elinor Wonders Why, and ABC with Kenny G. The app is available on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire Stick.

YoBoHo New Media, a digital-first content production and distribution subsidiary of Vancouver-based BBTV Holdings, and home to the popular kids IP HooplaKidz, has entered into a deal with a leading global distributor. The Orchard, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment, will further expand distribution and monetization for YoBoHo’s popular library of kids songs and family content which includes HooplaKidz, KidsCamp, Teehee Town, All Babies Channel, Annie & Ben, Yayo Y Lula, and a music library of over 3,000 tracks across many languages including English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, German, Bahasa, Vietnamese, Italian, Russian, and Thai.

Waterfront Innovation Centre

Score Media and Gaming Inc. has entered into an agreement to lease a new 80,000-sq. ft. space to house its headquarters in the Waterfront Innovation Centre in downtown Toronto. theScore will occupy more than 85% of The Exchange, one of two buildings that make up the state-of-the-art complex. The digital sports media and gaming company says the new office space will house theScore’s “rapidly growing workforce and accommodate its accelerating business operations, including the highly anticipated rollout of online sports betting in Canada.” Penn National Gaming, which recently acquired theScore, plans to continue operating the company as a stand-alone business. Penn National says it expects to leverage Canadian tech talent to expand theScore’s engineering and production workforce based in Toronto as the business scales.

Media Technology Monitor (MTM) has released a new report looking at how Canadians are consuming advertising. Its research finds that when a TV commercial comes on, more than half (53%) of TV viewers say they look for something else to do. Just under half (45%) turn to another screen such as a smartphone. Younger TV viewers, aged 18-49, are more likely to do so than are older ones. Four in five online video viewers say they skip online advertisements as soon as they are able to do so. A quarter of people aged 18-34 say they mute the sound on the ad – nearly twice those aged 50+. Younger consumers are also nearly three times as likely to switch to another tab than those 65+. Over two-fifths of online Canadians have downloaded or used an ad blocker.

REGULATORY, TELECOM & MEDIA:

Seaside Communications and Rogers Communications have announced a joint agreement that would see Rogers acquire the Sydney, NS-based, locally-operated telecommunications company. Serving Cape Breton and Northern Nova Scotia since 1975, Rogers says the acquisition will offer Seaside additional support and resources to continue investing in the communities it serves while expanding its networks to connect more residents and businesses. Seaside will continue to lead the day-to-day business with the same brand and local presence, with plans to introduce faster internet speed options and additional services like Rogers Ignite TV over the next few months.

CBC News has released data from a “cultural census” it has undertaken ahead of the anticipated fall release of the Canadian Newsroom Diversity Survey, led by the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ). Based on employee self-declarations, the data’s findings (as of Dec. 2020) include that CBC newsrooms skew female at all levels: senior leadership is 54% female vs. 46% male, while journalists are 56% female and 44% male, supervisors 59% female and 41% male, and part-time staff 60% female and 40% male. Of senior newsroom leaders in management positions, 22% are people of colour or Indigenous. Read more here.

Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is working with UNIFOR, World Press Freedom Canada, PEN Canada, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Canadian Afghan Lawyers Association, the International Women’s Media Foundation, CAJ, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), a local network of Afghan journalists and a network of humanitarian organizations to get affiliated Afghan journalists, women journalists and writers, human rights defenders, humanitarians and staff evacuated. JHR is attempting to raise $125,000 to assist with evacuation costs, saying the situation on the ground at Kabul airport remains extremely volatile. Executive Director Rachel Pulfer says all journalists and fixers who have worked in a visible way with Western organizations are targets, as are female journalists and journalists’ family members.

The Ontario Association of Broadcasters (OAB) is inviting all Ontario member stations to enter their best station and staff work to be considered for one of four OAB Awards: Best In Class Sales Award, which recognizes an individual salesperson who shows their ability to speak to the needs, wants and wishes of a new client with a successful radio campaign; Creative Award, presented to the writer/producer who creates the best 30 or 60 radio ad that inspires action, evokes emotion and produces results for the client; Community Service Campaign(s) Award, presented to the station for outstanding contribution to worthwhile organizations in its community, and the Promotion Award, awarded to the station that best promotes itself. The deadline for entries is Friday, Oct. 8.
