Ian Caldwell, longtime Managing Editor at CTV News Toronto, has produced his last newscast as he retires after a combined 26 years with the network and 47 in radio and TV news.
Caldwell produced his final newscast last Thursday, with CTV News Toronto at Six anchors Michelle Dube and Nathan Downer, paying tribute to the veteran journalist, producer and manager on-air, calling him “an incredible member of our team.”
A 1983 graduate of the Broadcast Journalism program at Fanshawe College, Caldwell got his start in radio as an announcer and news reader at CHUC Cobourg, ON in 1978. He went on to work at CFPL London part-time while in college, before landing at CKLC Kingston.
He made the move into television at CFPL-TV in 1984, where he worked as a reporter and producer until 1997 when he joined CTV Toronto. Caldwell was initially hired as a reporter, lineup editor and producer, before taking on the role of assignment editor from 2000-07. After a decade, he briefly left to serve as the Manager of Online Editorial Content at Metroland Media Group in Durham Region, before returning to CTV in 2009 as Managing Editor. He had held the role of Managing Assignment Editor for CTV Toronto and CP24 since late 2023 on the newly-established CTV News centralized assignment desk.
“I believe the future of the industry relies on new journalists being given the same kind of chances that I was provided in my early career,” Caldwell told Broadcast Dialogue. “College and university programs provide an essential foundation. But it’s the real-world experience in everyday news, covering everything from township councils to once in a generation major news events, that will provide the grounding for a long and successful career.”
Among the landmark stories Caldwell helped cover during his time at CTV were the 2010 Olympic torch run, the G20 riots, the 2018 Toronto van attack and Danforth shooting, in addition to countless other stories.
