CBC unveils winter podcast slate

CBC has unveiled its winter slate of original podcasts, including a new weekly show from the public broadcaster’s Washington Bureau, an exploration of deepfake porn, and a look at a Saskatchewan QAnon cult.

  • Two Blocks from the White House (launching weekly on Wednesdays, starting Jan. 14), features veteran reporters Paul Hunter and Katie Simpson, sitting down with their colleagues at CBC News’ Washington Bureau to talk through the big stories in the U.S. capitol and ask the question: what does this mean for Canada?
  • Hunting the Suicide Salesman (launches Jan. 19), is a five-episode sequel to Hunting Warhead, as host Daemon Fairless focuses on another dark corner of the internet: suicide. The podcast follows the case of Canadian Kenneth law, who is about to face trial for 14 counts of first degree murder after people around the world started killing themselves with a strange new substance, tracked back to an online suicide forum. Law has been connected to at least 110 more deaths in Canada, the UK, the U.S., Australia and beyond.
  • Personally: Creation Myth (Launches Feb. 10, 8 episodes). Personally returns with Creation Myth, delving into the personal revelations of host Helena de Groot following her decision to not have children.
  • Understood: Mr. Deepfakes (4 episodes, launches Feb. 17). Deepfake porn is a billion-click industry built on stolen faces, while the people making it hide theirs behind screens. Hosted by journalist Sam Cole, Understood: Mr. Deepfakes traces the decades-long rise of synthetic porn, the targets fighting back, and the global investigation that led to its Canadian kingpin.

Investigative series Uncover continues with The Cult Queen of Canada, exposing untold decades of turmoil in the village of Richmound, SK and the trail of destruction brought about by the self-proclaimed “Queen of Canada,” Romana Didulo. Investigative journalist Rachel Browne follows Shauna Shen, ringleader of the town’s anti-cult movement and Melinda Fischer, a local busybody who becomes the cult’s “Minister of International Affairs.”
