Creative BC is getting into the podcast funding space with the launch of a $100,000 Pilot Podcast Program.
The first-of-its-kind program will support the development, production, and promotion of podcasts by B.C.-based content producers. It will operate two separate streams of funding (each earmarked for $50,000 in available funds) – Podcast Pipeline, supporting development, and Podcast Connect, which will help existing podcasts with production and/or promotion support.
To be eligible for funding, applicants must be a registered society, non-profit or company incorporated in B.C. or Canada with its head office in British Columbia. A single company is only eligible for one grant under the program from either stream.
The Podcast Pipeline stream, which makes a maximum of $10,000 available per project, is intended to develop documentary or narrative storytelling podcast pitches to get in front of commissioning editors. Activities eligible for funding include research, pre-interviews, conceptualizing, drafting outlines, building characters, constructing chapters and episodes, and recording audio samples. Chat, news and discussion programs are not eligible for the Podcast Pipeline stream.
The Podcast Connect stream is divided into two parts. One aimed at improving reach and expanding audiences and the second intended to support companies, non-profit organizations and registered societies that have pre-existing or supplementary content they would like to get into a podcast format. Eligible activities include transforming archive materials into a podcast format; supplementing a preexisting commercial property (books, magazines, TV programs, etc.) with an accompanying podcast; or companion podcasts for film and television. Training costs for relevant upskilling will also be considered.
The second part of Podcast Connect is aimed at helping existing podcasts improve discoverability via promotional activities and marketing support. The same podcast can apply to Podcast Connect for a combination of production and promotional support with up to $15,000 in funding available to a single project.
Funding applications, which are being accepted until April 30, will be evaluated on factors including viability and market potential, existing number of podcast subscribers, and creative evaluation.
Creative BC says the program is intended to help improve the competitive position of B.C.-based podcast producers in domestic and international markets.
“Creative BC is proud to announce support for podcasters,” said Creative BC CEO Prem Gill, in a statement provided to Broadcast Dialogue. “This medium connects many of the creators within our sector – from domestic filmmakers to book and magazine publishers, and we are excited to support and develop the companies, projects and creators who tell stories in this highly competitive and sought-after format.”
