Canadian series challenging health trends set for Netflix premiere this month

A User’s Guide to Cheating Death, a Canadian docuseries challenging health trends from laser fillers to holistic medicine, is set to premiere on Netflix later this month.

Season 1 of the provocative series is set to stream North-America-wide, starting Sept. 28, while Season 2 will begin airing on VisionTV on Oct. 15.

Produced by Toronto-based Peacock Alley Entertainment, each one-hour episode challenges mass-marketed health trends often fuelled by celebrity pop culture.

The series is hosted by University of Alberta law professor Timothy Caulfield, known for his book Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?

“We felt there was an appetite for a show like this right now because there is so much noise out there about health that is given a veneer of science. If it is marketed as scientific, I think it is legitimate to critique it using science with an informed, open-minded and fun approach that offers different perspectives,” Caulfield said in a press release.

The series first season has become an international hit since premiering on VisionTV last fall. It’s now seen in 67 territories, including Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Africa, India, much of Europe and the Far East. It has been picked up by SBS Australia, TV New Zealand, Societe Radio-Canada, Telefonica in Spain, DR in Denmark, BBC Worldwide, UR Sweden, TVB in Hong Kong, S+ in Portugal, Ananey in Israel and AMC in Central Europe.

Peacock Alley has also announced a deal with Sky Vision for the distribution rights to Season 2.

The first season of A User’s Guide to Cheating Death covers everything from the current trend of detoxification cleansing to the unregulated world of the anti-aging industry; direct-to-consumer genetic testing; weight loss obsession, and more. Season 2 delves deeper examining sex and relationships, body hacking, germs, and spiritual science.
