Mercedes Stephenson exits Global to join The Globe and Mail as Ottawa Bureau Chief

Mercedes Stephenson has announced that she’s now Ottawa Bureau Chief at The Globe and Mail, exiting Global News after a more than eight-year run in the same position at the network.

Stephenson, who also served as the host of flagship political show, The West Block, will be succeeded by David Akin, who had been filling in for the veteran political reporter on an interim basis while she’s been off on maternity leave for the past year.

“I’m excited to share a big professional change for me this fall with the changing of the seasons,” said Stephenson, in a post to social media. “After more than eight wonderful years at Global News, I accepted a new role as the Ottawa Bureau Chief for The Globe and Mail. My first day was Monday, which was also my first day back after a year of parental leave! Please feel free to reach out if you’d like to connect. Looking forward to covering this very fast moving and consequential period for Canada.”

Prior to signing on with Global in 2018, Stephenson was a host and reporter with CTV from 2011-18, serving as a parliamentary reporter and the host of CTV’s Power Play one day a week.

Akin formerly served as Global’s Chief Political Correspondent for nearly a decade, in addition to reporting roles with Postmedia, CTV, The Globe and Mail, and National Post.
