Global News Toronto expands early evening newscast

Global News Toronto has announced it’s adding a half hour to its early evening newscast, starting Sept. 16.

Tracy Tong

Veteran anchor and reporter Antony Robart will helm the new Global News at 5, airing from 5 – 6 p.m. ET., and will join anchor/producer Tracy Tong on Global News at 6, from 6 – 6:30 p.m. ET. Global National with Dawna Friesen will continue to air at 6:30 p.m. in Toronto.

“Sharing stories from people of the GTA, Ontario and this country has been a passion of mine for decades,” said Robart, in a Corus Entertainment announcement. It is an incredible honour, privilege and a great source of pride to take on this important responsibility at such a critical time.”

Meteorologist Anthony Farnell will appear on both Global News at 5 and Global News at 6, with Tracy Tong also continuing to anchor Global News at 11, along with weather specialist Caley Bedore.

Colin D’Mello

Other changes see Miranda Anthistle take on Robart’s former role of National Anchor on Global News Morning, joining anchor Candace Daniel and meteorologist Ross Hull.

Beginning Oct. 6, Queen’s Park Bureau Chief Colin D’Mello will also take on a new role as the host of Focus Ontario, Global News’ provincial affairs program focused on political debates, current events, and Queen’s Park. Focus Ontario will air Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. ET and Sundays at 8 a.m. ET, 11:30 a.m. ET and midnight ET.
