AM/FM reaching 85 per cent of key demo weekly, says Numeris

AM/FM radio is reaching 85% of Canadians, 25-54, each week, according to Numeris’ latest insights release for Winter 2023.

Reflecting the 13-week period from Nov. 28, 2022 to Feb. 26, 2023, weekly reach among those 25-54 was highest with Franco Montreal listeners at 91.7%, followed by Calgary and Edmonton which both saw reach of 86.2%.

In the 25-54 demo, 63% of AM/FM listening was done outside the home, comparable to Winter 2022. Vancouver and Calgary/Edmonton continue to record the highest percentage of out-of-home (OOH) tuning at 74% and 71%, respectively, with Calgary seeing a 10% increase in out-of-home tuning year-over-year. OOH tuning was highest during drive (73%) and daytime (71%).

Numeris says adults, 25-54, spent an average of just over six hours a week listening, led by Franco Montrealers who spend 8.4 hours with radio weekly. Across all metered markets, audiences are listening to an average of two stations a day, three a week in Western markets, 3.4 stations weekly in Toronto, and four stations a week in Franco Montreal.

Live streaming of AM/FM maintained a 10% overall share, A12+, with those in Vancouver and Toronto live streaming slightly more than the other PPM markets (11%). Share of AM/FM streaming was also up one percentage point with both Anglo and Franco Montrealers.

While Numeris has ceased publishing topline data, you can find David Bray’s breakdown of the top performers in each market here.
