CBC is establishing a permanent bureau in Lethbridge, AB as it expands its coverage of southern Alberta.
“I’m excited to launch our permanent bureau in Lethbridge to serve the people and stories of southern Alberta,” said Helen Henderson, Senior Director of Journalism and Programming, CBC Calgary, in a release from the public broadcaster. “Having a full-time journalist in place allows us to fully explore the richness and diversity throughout our province, going far beyond what we can provide from Calgary.”
Ose Irete will be CBC’s permanent journalist in Lethbridge. A University of Lethbridge graduate, Irete is a Nigerian-Canadian multimedia storyteller who spent nearly a decade in the city.
With CBC Calgary since Nov. 2021, Irete began reporting in Lethbridge last week. He previously co-hosted the “Sort Of Nigerian” podcast and “My ‘Berta Beginnings,” documenting immigrant journeys to Alberta.
“I’m excited to be back in town and covering a community I know so well,” said Irete. “There’s so much more to this part of the province than people might think from the outside looking in, and I’m really looking forward to showing that. I’ll be digging deep on issues like housing, transportation and healthcare that matter to the people of Lethbridge and southern Alberta, while also showing why so many people are happy to call this place home.”
CBC is hosting a two-day launch event to celebrate the bureau’s opening, in partnership with the Lethbridge Public Library, Jan. 20-21.
CBC will be broadcasting live from the library’s Main Branch on Friday, with local residents invited to be part of a live audience to watch Alberta at Noon and The Homestretch radio shows go to air. CBC will also host an after dark comedy night at Good Times Lethbridge Comedy Club featuring local comics.
Free events continue Saturday with storytime for kids featuring CBC hosts, including Angela Knight from regional morning show, The Calgary Eyeopener; musical performances featuring local bands; a chance to pitch a story to CBC; an opportunity to host a mock newscast, and more.
