The Weston family is backing new not-for-profit digital media outlet, Be Giant, billed as a “purpose-built,” non-partisan organization “leaning into solutions-based reportage” with a focus on innovation, science and entrepreneurship.
Helmed by Allison Uncles, former Maclean’s editor-in-chief, the publication went live on Thursday with stories ranging from a Yukon startup working to reduce 9-1-1 wait times, to making hockey more affordable, the rise of the citizen developer, and an interview with celebrated Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield on the Artemis II mission.
In an editor’s note, Uncles wrote that the publication is proceeding “with a deliberate sense of optimism.”
“Backed by the Weston family, we have purpose-built this new non-profit, non-partisan organization to explore the breakthroughs and innovations answering Canada’s greatest challenges, as well as the people relentlessly driving those ideas forward,” she continued. “Our core idea is that the knowledge of what is already being accomplished in Canada can inspire greater confidence to face down our existential challenges.”
“Be Giant will lean into solutions-based reportage, ensuring that when we identify a problem, we also tell you about someone trying to solve it. While our focus is to highlight solutions, bold thinking and inspiring work, we will not shy away from valid criticism of new ideas. Our stories will address questions that include how, why and what if – fundamental questions that too often fall victim to the pace of modern news cycles.”
The outlet won’t accept advertising, nor will it install a paywall. Uncles said going forward, Be Giant will also look to form partnerships with other media organizations to make its journalism free to local media outlets to republish.
In addition to long form features and interviews, Be Giant will publish weekly newsletter, The Leap.
