Steve Ladurantaye hired to head news at Scotland’s STV

Canadian journalist Steve Ladurantaye has been appointed head of news at Scottish broadcaster STV

Ladurantaye has been with the CBC since 2016 when he was brought in to help lead digital strategy after five years at Twitter.

He joins Glasgow-based STV as head of News & Current Affairs in the wake of restructuring, announced in May, which saw the closure of the broadcaster’s STV2 Channel and 59 jobs cut

“STV News is an industry leader at a pivotal time. I’m so excited to build on the work already done and to ensure STV News finds its audience on whichever screen they favour,” Ladurantaye said in a statement.

“As Head of STV News, Steven Ladurantaye will bring extensive experience of delivering the changes that we are introducing combined with a strong public service broadcast background and passion for journalism. I look forward to working with Steven as he makes a key contribution to the next chapter of STV News,” added STV’s Bobby Hain, managing director for Broadcast.

Ladurantaye’s time with CBC wasn’t without controversy. He was re-assigned from the role of managing editor of flagship evening newscast The National in May 2017 after his involvement in a Twitter conversation supporting a so-called “cultural appropriation prize” for Canadian literature that sparked furore on the internet.

He was reassigned to a digital strategy role in Content Experience and a few months later appointed managing editor of the entertainment, business, health, science, tech and opinion units, in addition to managing the interactives team.

Ladurantaye started his career reporting and editing at newspapers like the Kingston Whig-Standard, Peterborough Examiner and The Globe & Mail.
