‘Run Terry Run’ sets Canadian box office record for a documentary opening

Run Terry Run, the feature-length documentary on the Canadian hero’s 1980 Marathon of Hope, had the biggest opening theatrical weekend for an English-language Canadian documentary in over a decade.

The film grossed a staggering $116K at the Canadian box office over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, following its opening on Friday, Oct. 9 on over 150 screens – the biggest opening for a non-concert documentary since Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004. It surpasses a previous record set by Rob Stewart’s Revolution in 2012, which earned $114K.

Directed by Sean Menard and distributed by Elevation Pictures, through 96 reels of never-before-seen visuals and audio interviews, the film goes behind-the-scenes of the Marathon of Hope with viewers brought directly into the van and onto the streets with Terry, his best friend Doug, and his younger brother Darrell.

Run Terry Run had its world premiere at TIFF and has screened at film festivals across the country, including the Atlantic International Film Festival, Edmonton International Film Festival, Calgary International Film Festival, and Vancouver International Film Festival.

“When I set out to make this film, my hope was for Canadians to be able to go to their local movie theatre and experience Terry’s incredible journey on the big screen,” said Menard, in a release. “To see that it’s happening for an independent documentary in a historic way is a testament to Terry Fox and his remarkable ability to bring the country together.”

Proceeds from the film will go towards supporting cancer research via the Terry Fox Foundation.
