Rogers Sports & Media cuts hit OMNI TV, Citytv

Rogers Sports & Media has confirmed it has given working notice to roughly two dozen employees at its multicultural broadcaster, OMNI Television, as the company proceeds with a round of voluntary buyouts and job cuts previously announced in July.

Nineteen Citytv employees agreed to a voluntary buyout, while another 23 unionized staff – primarily at OMNI Toronto – received notice last Thursday that they’ll be laid off effective Aug. 14.

The positions impacted include two studio camera operators, five field camera operators, two editors, one senior editor, one media operations administrator, three media operations coordinators, one creative services coordinator, one commercial production producer, one full-time and one part-time Arabic reporter, one part-time Punjabi reporter, one floor director and three integrated playout operators.

Several OMNI anchors in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver were part of the initial wave of 230 job cuts announced in July.

A spokesperson for Rogers Sports & Media told Broadcast Dialogue that there will be no programming changes as a result of the staff departures.
