Ryan Somers aka RS Smooth will succeed the retiring Dave Bannerman as an instructor with Nova Scotia Community College’s Radio and Television Arts program. Somers leaves his production assistant position at Newcap Halifax.
Stéphane Giroux has won a second term as president of FPJQ (Federation Professionnelle des Journalistes du Quebec). The CTV Montreal judicial reporter was re-elected by acclamation and continues his work at the head of the board of directors for a two-year term.
Roger Dubois, regarded as CBC Ottawa’s first video journalist, has retired after 40 years with the public broadcaster.
Ève-Marie Lortie will take over the FM93 (CJMF-FM) Quebec City time slot formerly held by Gilles Parent. Cogeco Media has ended its contract with Parent, who was the subject of sexual misconduct allegations. He was taken off-air Oct. 19 after the Journal de Québec published details of the allegations. He had hosted the show since 2007.
Sylvie Courtemanche will be the new chair of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) effective Jan. 2. Courtemanche takes over from Andrée Noël, who is retiring after six years in the position. She joins the CBSC from Corus Entertainment where she was a senior executive on regulatory matters and government relations. Courtemanche was also a former executive VP, Policy and Regulatory Affairs, with the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, and was Legal Counsel at the CRTC for several years.
News 95.7 (CJNI-FM) Halifax has made some changes coinciding with the launch of Rogers/iVillage Media partnership halifaxtoday.com. Morning news editor Meghan Groff has moved into the role of Community Editor with the new digital site. Andrew Pinsent moves into the morning editor role. Steve MacArthur, who was most recently news director at Acadia Broadcasting in Saint John, NB moves into the afternoon anchor/editor position, starting Nov. 20.
Jeff Keddy has accepted a position as a Spectrum Management Officer with Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada. Keddy has worked in broadcasting for 20 years, starting his career with EastLink TV in Nova Scotia, and moving on to Trinity Television and APTN in Winnipeg. He also did a stint as a broadcast engineer with NewCap Radio in the Alberta Northwest region.
Jodi Mackie is joining D360 as director of sales and acquisitions. Mackie has held the same position at Breakthrough Entertainment since 2007.
