Prime Video doc to chronicle rise and fall of Winnipeg sportscaster Steve Vogelsang

Prime Video has released the trailer for upcoming Amazon Original documentary, The Sexiest Man in Winnipeg, telling the true story of former Winnipeg sportscaster Steve Vogelsang, who went from local celebrity to convicted bank robber.

Set to premiere on Prime Video in Canada on May 9, Canadian Will Arnett’s Electric Avenue is attached to produce, alongside VespucciBridie Bischoff, Aaron Barnett, Charlie Siskel, and Ben Daughtrey were executive producers on the doc, with Arnett (who also narrates), Johnny Galvin, Daniel Turcan, and Marc Forman serving as producers. The story is based on an unpublished article, written by Jordan Michael Smith, who is also a co-producer on the film.

The documentary is directed by Acadamy Award-nominated filmmaker Charlie Siskel (Finding Vivian Maier) and Ben Daughtrey, who also edited the film.

Vogelsang, best known for his time with CTV Winnipeg and his run as a Red River College journalism instructor, pleaded guilty to a string of 2017 bank robberies in Saskatchewan and Alberta. He was initially sentenced to five years for robberies in Regina and Saskatoon, with an additional 18 months handed down for two robberies in Medicine Hat, that was served consecutively.

At his sentencing hearing, his lawyer said the robberies were “the bottom of a seven-year downward spiral,” as Vogelsang – who had been diagnosed with depression – found himself saddled with debt following a period of unemployment after his then-wife moved to Nelson, BC.

The Sexiest Man in Winnipeg joins award-winning Canadian Amazon Original documentaries, including TIFF 2024 People’s Choice Documentary Award winner The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal and TIFF 2023 People’s Choice Documentary Award and Canadian Screen Award-winner Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe, among other projects.
