David Common named new host of CBC Morning Live

With Heather Hiscox taking her final turn Thursday morning as host of CBC Morning Live after 20 seasons at the helm of the network morning show, veteran journalist David Common has been named as her successor.

Common has hosted CBC Toronto weekday morning radio show, Metro Morning, since 2023. He’ll take on the national TV morning show full-time, starting Feb. 2. Guest hosts will step in to lead CBC Morning Live until then.

Originally from Winnipeg, Common began his career with CBC News in 1999 in the London, UK bureau, later moving between Toronto, Fredericton, Winnipeg and Regina. A stint in Paris as a European correspondent followed, then New York City bureau chief, and by 2013 he was anchoring CBC Radio’s World Report. He went on to co-host Marketplace and be deployed nationally and internationally to major events, including covering conflict in Ukraine, Middle East, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Egypt, among more than 90 countries he’s reported from.

“I can’t think of a better person than David Common to take the reins of CBC Morning Live,” said Brodie Fenlon, General Manager and Editor-in-Chief of CBC News, in an announcement from the public broadcaster. “David brings to the job journalistic heft, a great sense of humour and a genuine passion for helping Canadians understand the stories shaping their world.”

“It is an honour to join the team that sets the morning news agenda, helping decipher our complex world,” added Common. “And we’ll ensure a daily dose of fun, to relieve the pressure valve of our daily lives.”
