Corus Entertainment confirms more layoffs across Global News, talk radio

Corus Entertainment has confirmed another round of layoffs are underway across its radio and television divisions.

The company confirmed to Broadcast Dialogue late Wednesday that it’s making changes that will impact roles at Global BC, its flagship newscast Global National, and its talk radio network, including 640 Toronto (CFIQ-AM).

“As we continue to adapt to the evolving needs of our business, Corus has made a small number of changes in select markets, including roles at Global BC, Global National, News 640 and talk radio,” a Corus spokesperson said, in an emailed statement.

“These changes are part of the difficult but necessary work to ensure our teams are structured in a sustainable way, while minimizing disruption to local news and audio delivery. We remain committed to supporting our news operations, and these changes do not reflect station closures or a retreat from our commitment to news. We continue to evolve our operating model so we can deliver trusted news to audiences across platforms as effectively as possible.”

This new round of layoffs follows an earlier round of job cuts in mid-July that impacted roughly 45 unionized employees, the majority at Global News in Alberta as the company moved to centralize aspects of news production in Toronto for the Calgary and Edmonton markets. On-air talent at several Corus Radio stations were also among those departing the company.

Santiago Bedoya, 640 Toronto’s Imaging and Technical Producer for the past three years, is among those confirmed to be caught up in the new round.
