CBC rebrands flagship evening radio newscast as ‘Your World Tonight’

CBC News is undertaking a rebrand of its flagship evening radio newscast as it moves to make the broadcast simultaneously available as an on-demand podcast.

Your World Tonight debuts in place of the long-running The World at Six and The World This Weekend, starting today.

Anchored by Susan Bonner, Monday to Thursday, and Tom Harrington on Fridays, Your World Tonight will air on CBC Radio weekdays at 6 p.m. in all regions (6:30 p.m. in NL). Stephanie Skenderis will helm the weekend version, heard at 6 p.m. ET/7 p.m. AT, and then at 6 p.m. local time across the rest of the country.

It will be available daily as a podcast as of 6 p.m. ET.

Featuring journalism and analysis on the news of the day, The World at Six has been a cornerstone of network radio programming for almost six decades, first going to air in the fall of 1966.

Brodie Fenlon, General Manager & Editor in Chief, CBC News, said in a statement provided to Broadcast Dialogue that the new offering will be more streamlined.

“We are always looking for ways to bring our unique brand of news coverage to even more Canadians,” said Fenlon. “Your World Tonight offers audiences more choice in how they connect with the news they need on CBC and the new name better reflects this reality, as they are able to listen to our flagship nightly newscast at any hour of the day. The core of the YWT mission remains the same — to bring you the most important stories from around the world, with context, analysis and surprise — but will now be reversioned into a tighter, streamlined podcast offer.”

This isn’t the first CBC Radio staple that the public broadcaster has transitioned to a digital-first format, revamping Q with Tom Power last January as a daily podcast, available to stream or download ahead of the radio broadcast at 4 a.m. ET.
