CBC/Radio-Canada named Broadcaster of the Year by New York Festivals Radio Awards

CBC/Radio-Canada has been named Broadcaster of the Year by the New York Festivals Radio Awards.

Highlighting the achievements of global creators in radio and podcasting, CBC Radio current affairs program, The Current, was among this year’s award winners, earning a Gold trophy in the On-Air Talent category for host Matt Galloway. Long-running radio docuseries IDEAS, also claimed Gold for its episode on Child Sex Abuse Prevention: How Best to Protect Kids.

Additional wins included Silver for CBC’s daily current affairs podcast, Front Burner, audio drama series PlayMe, Reclaimed – Indigenous Kids, and Radio-Canada productions Lucien supersensible, La version qui n’intéresse personne, Les années lumière: 30 ans, and La mort libre: 10 ans d’aide médicale à mourir. Bronze winners encompassed Atlantic Voice – Coming Full Circle, Oliver Jones et les lumières de la Petite-Bourgogne, and À l’école de Gilles Vigneault. CBC/Radio-Canada also earned an impressive 13 Finalist Awards.

CBC’s podcast collaboration with NPR, Tested – the unfolding story of elite female runners who have been told they can no longer race as women, because of their biology – additionally picked up a Grand Tower and Gold Tower in the Sports Podcast category.

“CBC/Radio-Canada is immensely proud to be named Broadcaster of the Year, a recognition that underscores the power of public broadcasting to tell exceptional stories,” said CBC/Radio-Canada President & CEO Marie-Phillipe Bouchard, in a release. “As Canada’s national public broadcaster, our audio storytelling in English and French informs and enlightens audiences on today’s most critical issues. From the CBC/NPR co-production Tested to Radio-Canada’s La mort libre: 10 ans d’aide médicale à mourir (Free to Die: 10 Years of Medical Assistance in Dying), all the individual award winners and finalists demonstrate the excellence that characterizes our teams across Canada. Congratulations to everyone whose hard work led to this honour.”

Other Canadian winners included TVO and Toronto-based creative producing duo Innerspeak, who earned a Gold award in the Investigative Journalism Podcast category for Extradition: The Search for Huseyin Celil. Academic podcast company, Cited Media, also claimed Bronze for The Rationality Wars in the Education Podcast category. In the Personal Lives category, Podcast Nation’s Before We Go claimed Bronze.
