Canadians averaging 4.4 podcast episodes per week, says new report

True Crime, News and Comedy are the top genres among Canadian podcast listeners, according to Triton Digital’s inaugural Canada Mid-Year Podcast Trends Report.

A companion to Triton’s monthly Canada Podcast Rankerthe report incorporates data from the company’s IAB certified Podcast Metrics service, which measures server log data from Omny Studio and a variety of other hosting platforms.

According to the report, Canadians are listening to an average of three hours of podcast content per week, equating to an average 4.4 episodes weekly. Listening peaks Wednesday mornings between 10 a.m. and noon ET, with 92% of podcasts listened to on a mobile device.

Among participating Canada Podcast Ranker networks, the SiriusXM Podcast Network led average weekly download volume, followed by CBC/Radio-Canada and Wondery. The report indicates Wondery and CBC/Radio-Canada were in a tight race for the #2 position until May when Wondery surpassed the public broadcaster, hitting 2.7M average weekly downloads.

Dateline NBC leads the Top 5 most-listened to podcasts, followed by Wondery Network’s SmartLess, featuring Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes; and CBC daily news podcast, Front Burner. audiochuck’s Crime Junkie and Wondery’s My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark round out the top five. 

CBC dominates the Top 5 Canadian-made English-language podcasts, led by Front Burner, and including on-demand offerings of popular CBC Radio One programs The Current, The World This Hour, World Report, and Ideas. 

The top podcast debuts in the first half of 2023 included CBC’s The No Good, Terribly Kind, Wonderful Lives and Terrible Deaths of Honey and Barry Sherman; The Deck Investigates, hosted by Crime Junkie and The Deck host Ashley Flowers; and CBC’s Let’s Not Be Kidding with Gavin Crawford.
