Canada vs. USA rematch second most-watched hockey game ever on Sportsnet

Canada’s victory Thursday night over the USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship final was the second most-watched hockey game ever on Sportsnet.

The network says last night’s game averaged 5.7 million viewers, reaching 10.7 million Canadians. Audiences peaked at 7.3 million as Connor McDavid scored the winning goal in overtime.

That puts the broadcast only behind Sportsnet’s coverage of the Stanley Cup Final Game 7 in June 2024, which saw the Florida Panthers defeat the Edmonton Oilers, drawing an average minute audience of 7.55 million across Sportsnet, Citytv, and CBC. That game reached 15 million Canadians, or 39% of the population.

TVA Sports, which aired the game in French, said its broadcast drew 1.426 million viewers (47.8% market share).

According to NHL Public Relations, 16.1 million viewers across North America tuned in across Sportsnet, TVA Sports, ESPN, ESPN+, and Disney+.

The previous Canada vs. USA match-up on Saturday, Feb. 15 averaged 4.7 million viewers on Sportsnet, and reached 9.35 million Canadians.

The network says a total of 14.4 million Canadians tuned in to the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament on Sportsnet, between Feb. 12-20, which also featured Sweden and Finland.
