Basem Boshra has been named the new Senior Director of Journalistic Standards & Public Trust for CBC News.
An almost 30-year journalist, Boshra has been CBC Quebec’s Senior Managing Editor since 2022, overseeing journalism and programming, while also managing the CBC North Cree Unit for the past year and a half. He started his career at the Montreal Gazette where he ascended to the role of Deputy Editor, in addition to stints at Dose Magazine, the National Post and CTV Montreal.
He’ll transition into his new role in Toronto at the end of March.
“Basem is an experienced journalist and highly respected newsroom leader who steps into the role at a critical time for the CBC, when our journalistic standards and public service mandate are the subjects of vigorous public scrutiny and debate,” said Brodie Fenlon, General Manager and Editor-in-Chief, CBC News, in an internal announcement provided to Broadcast Dialogue. “His mission will be to act as the journalistic conscience of our news organization, ensuring we all adhere to the highest standards in the business as we do everything possible to maintain the public’s trust in our reporting.”
“I understand the assignment,” said Boshra. “The calibre and credibility of our journalism has never been more under the microscope as in this very moment. Supporting CBC News and its journalists in strengthening our work and bolstering our trust with Canadians is a responsibility I pledge to take on with all the care and thoughtfulness it deserves.”
The Journalistic Standards role was previously held by George Achi for the last three years, who joined the BBC this month as Head of Editorial Quality and Compliance, World Service.
