Village Media partners with OpenAI to launch AI community navigator

Village Media and OpenAI have announced a partnership to make trusted local information and community resources easier to access, starting with the launch of an AI-powered navigator called Open Door.

Aimed at helping residents connect with local businesses, non-profits, and essential services, the partnership is debuting its first initiative in Sault Ste. Marie. Open Door, built and operated by Village Media’s “Cares” team with support from OpenAI, allows residents to anonymously describe their needs in natural, everyday language – ranging from emergency food assistance and healthcare to housing – and receive direct connection to local support.

“Local news organizations play an essential role in keeping communities informed and connected, and we believe they are worth investing in,” said Varun Shetty of OpenAI. “AI can help them run their operations and businesses more effectively and build useful new products like Open Door… We’re excited by this partnership, which will help make it easier for people using ChatGPT and Search to find reliable, local, fact-based local information.”

The Sault Ste. Marie pilot draws from a curated directory of over 200 community organizations spanning 24 support categories. Unlike standard directories, the tool offers personalized, step-by-step guidance, outlining eligibility requirements, intake steps, and directions to help users navigate complex systems like non-emergency healthcare without needing a family doctor.

“Local journalism can and should be about more than reporting the news, it is about helping communities understand themselves and connecting people with the information they need,” said Jeff Elgie, CEO of Village Media. “Open Door builds on that mission. By combining our local knowledge and relationships with OpenAI’s technology, we can help residents navigate community services in a way that is simple, compassionate and practical.”

Municipal leaders are also welcoming the pilot, emphasizing the practical benefits for residents who often struggle to find where to turn during a crisis.

“Sault Ste. Marie is proud to be the first community to pilot Open Door,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker. “We have many organizations doing vital work, but people do not always know where to begin when they need help. Making those resources easier to find will have a meaningful impact for our residents and strengthen the connections among the organizations serving our community.”

Village Media retains editorial control over the platform, which the publisher says will feature strict privacy safeguards ensuring queries are not tied to user accounts or identity tracking. The tool will be accessible online and via mobile devices, with plans for expanded access through public facilities like libraries, hospitals, and shelters.

Following the initial rollout, Village Media and OpenAI plan to use feedback from residents and local organizations to refine the tool and evaluate expanding Open Door to additional markets.
