Edmonton sportscaster Kevin Karius announces retirement

Veteran Edmonton sportscaster Kevin Karius has announced his retirement after 36 years in broadcasting.

The host of The Kevin Karius Show on Stingray’s Sports 1440 (CKJR-AM), which has aired in the morning time slot since the station’s launch in 2023, Karius is best known for his 25-year run as a sports anchor on Global Edmonton. From 2003-10, he also served as the fill-in colour analyst on Edmonton Oilers radio broadcasts.

“It was an honour to be part of the Sports 1440 team from day one,” said Karius, in a station announcement. “After 33 years in television, making the move to radio and hosting the morning show was the capper of a 36-year career in sports broadcasting. I have been so fortunate to work with so many great people over the years, and I would like to thank all the viewers and listeners for their unwavering support.”

Karius began his broadcasting career in 1990 in Yorkton, SK, which was followed by stops in Prince Albert, Lethbridge, Saskatoon, and Calgary. In addition to his work on-air, he’s hosted The Kevin Karius Celebrity Golf Tournament since 2003, which has raised close to $2 million dollars for Easter Seals Alberta. He’s also played in “The World’s Longest Hockey Game” five times, benefitting the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

“Kevin’s been a great teammate on-air and in the building,” said Stingray Head of Sports Marty Stevens. “Not only was he favourite to 1440 listeners, but he also gave his time to our sister station CFCW’s charity hockey team. Kevin leaves big shoes to fill… and in this case they are a pair of well-worn red crocks.”

Karius’ final broadcast on Sports 1440 will air on June 26.
