Alan Horn will step down as chair of the board of Rogers Communications Inc. effective Jan. 1. Horn, president and CEO of Rogers Telecommunications Limited and certain private companies that control RCI, will remain on the RCI Board. Edward Rogers, currently deputy chair, will become chair, while Melinda Rogers will assume the role of deputy chair.
Paul Shaver, VP/Head of Nielsen Music Canada, will see his role expand in leading the radio business in the Canadian music market. Scott Musgrave has joined Nielsen Music as its U.S. Head of Radio Client Solutions and will focus on further developing the radio business for Nielsen. Musgrave previously spent 17 years at Arbitron, serving nine years as VP Sales/SVP General Manager of the radio station business.
Cindy Day, CTV Atlantic’s meteorologist for the last decade, has announced she’s leaving without elaborating on what might be next. Day’s last day on air will be Dec. 22.
Stephen Quinn will succeed Rick Cluff as host of CBC Vancouver’s Early Edition, starting Jan. 2. Gloria Macarenko will step in to Quinn’s current role as host of afternoon show On the Coast. Macarenko is currently host of Our Vancouver on CBC TV as well as the midday B.C. Almanac radio program.
Brennan Allen, morning meteorologist for CBC Maritimes, is headed to Edmonton to work for Environment Canada. Based out of Halifax, the recent Dalhousie University Meteorology grad joined CBC in the fall of 2016 when he took over for the retiring Peter Coade.
Kayla Hounsell is joining CBC Halifax permanently as the new network reporter, contributing to The National, network radio and cbc.ca. Hounsell has been with CBC on a casual basis since August after leaving CTV Halifax in May.
Tracy Lindeman, Montreal-based freelance writer, will be a regular contributor to Vice and Motherboard focusing on transit and the future of transportation.
Paul Scott, coordinator of the Broadcast Radio program at Conestoga College, will be retiring at the end of this semester. Scott has been with Conestoga since 1991. Prior to his teaching career, he was the longtime program manager at CFCA-FM Kitchener.

Wally Desjarlais, morning co-host at CFWE-FM Edmonton, has taken medical leave but is expected to rejoin the station sometime in the New Year. In the interim, Jeremy Harpe moves from the drive show to host mornings with Candice Ryan. Dustin McGladrey moves from midday to drive. The station welcomes Kimberley LaFramboise back to middays, who also takes on music responsibilities.
Amber Schinkel has joined CTV Vancouver Island as an anchor and reporter after signing off from the Global Calgary morning show in November.
Dave Sheldon has left his role as program director and morning host at Pulse 107.7 FM (CISF-FM) Surrey, to host evenings on Sportsnet 650 (CISL-AM) Vancouver. Sheldon had been with Pulse since February.
Christopher Walton has joined Cue Digital Media as director of Creative and Strategic Sales. In the newly-created role, Walton will lead content marketing, social media strategy, sponsorship and Influencer initiatives. He’s previously held creative, sales and advertising positions at AOL, Microsoft and Mindshare, most recently leading sales in Canada for Xbox.
Rourke Tapp is retiring from Canadian Broadcast Sales (CBS), effective Jan. 31. Rourke began his broadcast career in production with CFCF-TV Montreal in 1973, moving into sales with CFOX-AM Montreal, and other stations in the market. His foray into national sales included Tele Capitale Unicom, Glen Warren, WBS, CHUM Toronto, Radio Canada French CBC TV, Radio Sales Group, and All Canada Radio & Television. Eventually, Rourke found his way to CBS, where he spent the last 27 years.
Elizabeth Thompson, who had been filling in on a maternity leave contract with CBC Ottawa, is now on staff permanently, specializing in investigative and data journalism. Thompson was previously with iPolitics, Sun Media and the Montreal Gazette.
Richard Zussman has been let go by CBC Vancouver for reportedly not following protocol in requesting permission to proceed with a book he collaborated on about the fall of the B.C. Liberal government under Christy Clark. His case is now in the hands of an arbitrator. The public broadcaster faced intense criticism on social media from Zussman’s peers, following a column in the Globe and Mail by Gary Mason.
