Canadian productions earn 37 nominations heading into 2023 Rockie Awards

The Banff World Media Festival (BANFF) has announced the nominees for the 2023 Rockie Awards International Program Competition, recognizing excellence in television and digital media from around the globe.

The BBC leads nominations by company with 21, while FX Networks, National Geographic / Disney Branded Television, and Warner Bros. Discovery each garnered five nods. The U.S. leads nominations by country with 52, followed by the UK (41), Canada (37), Germany (8), Australia (6), and France (6).

Sort Of

Among the Canadian nominations are Sort Of (CBC, HBO Max, Sphere Media) which is up for Comedy Series: English Language; The Porter (Sphere Media, Inferno Pictures) in the Drama Series: English Language category; Ice-Breaker: The ’72 Summit Series (Adobe Productions, White Pine Pictures) and The Grizzlie Truth (Crossover Films, Five One Films, Grand Scheme, Christie Street Creative, UNINTERRUPTED Canada) in Sports Documentary; Dino Ranch (Boat Rocker, Industrial Brothers, Jam Filled, CBC, Disney Jr.), which earned a nomination in the Animation: Preschool category; and Odd Squad (Sinking Ship Entertainment, Fred Rogers Productions) in Live Action: Children.

Canadian productions nominated in the Podcast: Fiction category, include Mistletoe Murders, Audible Canada and Headspinner Productions’ holiday-themed podcast, featuring Cobie Smulders, Raymond Ablack and Anna Cathcart; and Wildlife Confidential from Audible Canada and Antica Productions, hosted by Andrew Phung and Samantha Bee.

The Rockie Awards International Program Competition is juried by a panel of 150 senior international industry professionals with the Rockie Awards Grand Jury choosing the recipient of the Grand Jury Prize, selected from the top-scoring programs across the entire field of nominees. This year’s Grand Jury includes: Mo Abudu, CEO, EbonyLife Media; Alice Dickens-Koblin, SVP, Head of Unscripted Programming, Starz; Peter Gal, Chief Creative Officer, Television, DreamWorks Animation; Cynthia Kennedy, VP, Distribution
Incendo & Quebecor Content; Mark Linsey, Managing Director, Scripted
BBC Studios; Jacqueline Sacerio, EVP, Co-Head of Scripted Development, eOne; and Beatrice Springborn, President, UCP & Universal International Studios.

In addition to the Grand Jury Prize, the $25,000 Rogers Prize for Excellence in Canadian Content, will be awarded to the top Canadian production and the Prix Francophone for the top French language production, among a total of 27 awards.

The Rockie Awards ceremony will be held in-person as well as live-streamed during this year’s festival on Monday, June 12 at 5 p.m. MT (7 p.m. ET, 4 p.m. PT).
