Terry DiMonte to be inducted into Canadian Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame

Canadian Music Week (CMW) has announced that Terry DiMonte will be a 2021 inductee of the Canadian Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. DiMonte has had a more than four-decade career in radio, announcing his retirement from the CHOM 97.7 Montreal morning show earlier this week.

DiMonte grew up in Montreal, harbouring a love of radio since childhood. He got his start when the CBC decided to take a shot on a young 19-year-old broadcaster willing to pack up all of his belongings – two pairs of jeans and three boxes of stuff – and head to Churchill, MB.

DiMonte soon headed to Winnipeg and CITI-FM, where he worked alongside names like Gary Aube, Steve Young, Brother Jake Edwards, Howard Mandshein, Andy Frost, Steve Warden, Doc Steen, and developed a lifelong friendship with Don Percy.

After a brief foray into the record business working with Winnipeg bands like Streetheart, Queen City Kids, and Kick Axe, he landed back in radio at CHOM and the station’s morning show in Nov. 1984.

DiMonte has also hosted at Montreal’s MIX-96 (CJFM-FM) and CJAD 800, as well as Q107 (CFGQ-FM) Calgary. He returned to Montreal and CHOM in 2012.

“We are proud to welcome Terry DiMonte to the Canadian Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame,” said Neill Dixon, CMW President in Thursday’s announcement. “Throughout his career, he has been a compelling companion to listeners across the country. Terry has been the quintessential morning man, gaining fans and ratings with every crack of dawn.”

This year’s Music & Broadcast Industry Awards (MBIA) will take place online on May 19 at 4:30 p.m. ET, hosted by Darrin Rose.
