CRTC opens public Facebook consultation on CBC/Radio-Canada

The CRTC is asking Canadians for their opinions on CBC/Radio-Canada programming as part of the public broadcaster’s licence renewal process.

“CBC/Radio-Canada plays an important role in the lives of Canadians. As Canada’s national public broadcaster, its main objective is to provide programming that is designed to inform, enlighten and entertain,” said CRTC Chairperson Ian Scott in a release. “As part of our consultation, we want to hear the opinions of Canadians so that they are reflected in CBC/Radio-Canada’s programming.”

The commission is hosting a Facebook consultation until Dec. 9 where the public can leave comments, or submit them online, by mail or fax until Feb. 13.

The CRTC says with changes in the way content is produced and distributed, it wants to hear from Canadians across the country to ensure the public broadcaster is producing content that reflects the diversity of Canada’s population, while meeting its needs in both official languages.

The public will also have an opportunity to share opinions on how content relates to the following themes: reflection, production, accessibility and discoverability, and contribution to democratic life in Canada.

CBC/Radio-Canada’s current radio and television licences are set to expire on Aug. 31, 2020.

As part of its review, the CRTC will hold a public hearing in the National Capital Region, starting May 25, 2020.
