Canadian comedy veterans partner in new Toronto studio venture

Canadian comedy veterans Tim Steeves and George Westerholm are joining writer/director David Merry in new film and TV production venture Home Invasion Studios.

The Toronto production company will specialize in content with a comedic edge.

Steeves and Westerholm both spent time in the writing rooms of This Hour Has 22 Minutes and The Rick Mercer Report, while Merry has been a contributer to Kids In the Hall, SCTV, Just for Laughs, and Last Comic Standing.

Between the partners, Home Invasion Studios boasts six Gemini Awards, three Canadian Screen Awards, four Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) Awards, one Rose D’Or for Excellence in Television, and three Canadian Comedy Awards.

“Sometimes a comedic project falls short because a part of the machine doesn’t fully understand some of the nuances of making people laugh,” said Merry. “Because our company is made up of comedy experts with many combined years in the entertainment industry, we can conceptualize, write, produce, direct, shoot, and edit everything ourselves. Whether it’s a movie or a television show, a YouTube series, commercial, or corporate training video, our clients come to us because we have complete comedic control over projects from start to finish.”

The company just wrapped production of their first hour long comedy special Grandma Used to Heckle Me with comedian Jeff Leeson. The studio also recently optioned its first feature film, a horror believe it or not, to Wald Pictures in Hollywood with Larry Horowitz, a professor in Humber College’s Comedy Writing and Performance program. Projects in scripted, unscripted, reality and game shows are also in development.
