Stéphane Cardin

Netflix has hired Stéphane Cardin, VP of Industry and Public Affairs for the Canada Media Fund (CMF), as its first Canadian employee. Cardin will be based in Montreal with his mandate as director of Public Policy for Canada to begin in mid-September. He’ll report to Netflix’s global government relations team in Washington. Cardin has been with CMF since 2006 and previously oversaw tax credits for Quebec’s Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC). Read more here.

Christie Fleischer

Netflix has hired former Disney executive Christie Fleischer to head its global Consumer Products team. Fleischer was previously the head of merchandise for parks, experiences and consumer products at Disney. In her new role, she’ll oversee retail and licensee partnerships, publishing, interactive games, merchandising and experiential events, as well as develop consumer products for Netflix original series and films.

Catherine Mathys

Catherine Mathys has joined the Canada Media Fund (CMF) to fill the position of director of Industry and Market Trends. Mathys is an award-winning Radio-Canada journalist.

Brooke Fox and Jubal Flagg

Corus has replaced its morning drive show at JUMP! 106.9 (CKQB-FM) Ottawa with syndicated American programming. Brooke & Jubal In The Morning, hosted by Brooke Fox and Jubal Flagg, hit the station’s airwaves Sept. 4. Based out of MOViN 92.5 (KQMV-FM) Seattle, the duo have been together since 2011, with the show launching into national syndication in 2015. Previous morning hosts Jesse Reynolds and Jenna Mosher are no longer with the company. Reynolds had been with the morning show since 2015, while Mosher started on middays with the station in 2014 and had been part of the morning team since March 2016. Read the full story here.

Norma Lee MacLeod

Norma Lee MacLeod has announced her retirement from CBC Halifax. Her last day is this Friday. MacLeod has been with CBC since 1984 and host of noon-hour call-in show Maritime Noon since 2011.

Tom Mark

Tom Mark is retiring after more than 47 years in broadcasting. Mark’s last shift at 1075 Beach Radio (CJIB-AM) Vernon will be Oct. 26. Mark’s interest in radio started with his high school radio club. He started reading weekend youth news on CKRC-AM Winnipeg in 1971, before landing in news full-time at CFRW-AM in 1973. Mark headed for the West Coast in ‘79 with stints at CFUN Vancouver, CKDA Victoria, CJOR, CHRX, and CJJR-FM Vancouver. He went on to helm the CKWX-AM Vancouver newsroom from 1996-2001 and was then the voice of morning news on CKNW-AM from 2001-2014. He’s been working with the Pattison stations in Vernon and Kelowna since 2015.

Sadiya Ansari, Laura Hensley, Adam Frisk, and Adam Wallis

Global News has picked up Sadiya Ansari, former associate editor at Chatelaine, to join its online team, along with Laura Hensley, formerly with Flare. Hensley will join Global’s Smart Living and Entertainment team. Adam Frisk also joins the Smart Living and Entertainment team from Global National, while Adam Wallis is Global’s new national online music journalist.

Rachel Schallom

Rachel Schallom is the new managing editor at VICE. Schallom was previously a newsroom project manager with the Wall Street Journal and is also senior writer for The Cohort, The Poynter Institute’s bi-weekly newsletter on issues impacting women in journalism.

Kenny Mason

Kenny Mason is leaving News 1130 (CKWX-AM) Vancouver to return to Rogers sister station 660 News (CFFR-AM) Calgary, where he got his start in radio. He’d been with News 1130 since 2015.

Marcus Fitzgerald

News 1130 (CKWX-AM) Vancouver overnight anchor Marcus Fitzgerald has moved into the evening sports role, doing double duty on 1130 and sister station Sportsnet 650 (CISL-AM) Fitzgerald joined News 1130 in March 2014 after three seasons of broadcasts with the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs.

Stephen Andrew

Stephen Andrew, former CFAX 1070 Victoria talk show host and CTV Victoria legislative reporter, has announced he’s taking another run at politics. Andrew came in fourth in the city’s 2014 mayoral race and now plans to seek a council seat.

Alicja Siekierska

Alicja Siekierska is leaving the Financial Post to join Yahoo Finance, which is expanding its coverage of Canadian business. Siekierska has previously written for the Edmonton Journal, Globe and Mail and Toronto Star.

Margaret Gallagher

Margaret Gallagher is joining CBC Vancouver weekday afternoon show On The Coast as a reporter. Also host of CBC Radio One jazz program Hot Air, Gallagher had been a regular part of The Early Edition since 2001.

Sam McKee

Sam McKee is the new Toronto Maple Leafs game day producer for the Fan 590 (CJCL-AM). McKee has been with Sportsnet since 2014.

Ryan Fabro

Ryan Fabro is moving into the dual role of assistant program director/senior producer at Sportsnet 590 The Fan (CJCL-AM). Fabro has been with the station since 2005, most recently as producer of Sportsnet’s Starting Lineup.

Sportsnet 960 (CFAC-AM) Calgary is making changes to its schedule with new afternoon show Pinder & Steinberg, featuring Ryan Pinder, who has been the station’s morning co-host since 2013, and Pat Steinberg. The duo take over the 2 to 6 p.m. daypart.

NHL alum Marc Savard is joining Sportsnet the Fan 590. Savard will work alongside LeafsNation host Gord Stellick and contribute across the Sportsnet radio network. LeafsNation co-host Todd Hlusko has left the show after a three-year run to be director of North American scouting and player development for Adler Mannheim Hockey Club DEL Germany.

Jason Botchford

Jason Botchford is leaving the Vancouver Province after 13 years to join online subscription sports site The Athletic Vancouver. Botchford, who has been covering the NHL since 2005, will also continue to be a regular contributor to TSN 1040 (CKST-AM).

Greg Thomey

Shaun Majumder was reportedly the tip of the iceberg in changes at CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Sources to the Toronto Star say founding cast member and writer Greg Thomey, who had been with the show for at least 21 seasons, did not have his contract renewed. Other key writers not returning include Bob Kerr, Matt Wright, Greg Cochrane and Allison Hogg. New cast members this season will include Second City alumnus Ann Pornel and Vancouver comedian Graham Clark.

Jeremy Smith

Jeremy Smith is out at 104.7 Heart FM (CIHR-FM) Woodstock after more than 10 years hosting Weekend Mornings. The show has been replaced with out-of-market voice-tracking. Also affected by the changes are weekend/swing announcers Andrea Krasowski and Tom E. (Ebblewhite).

Dora Candelaria

Dora Candelaria will lead global film marketing for eOne as EVP, Marketing and Film. Based in L.A., Candelaria has been with Paramount Pictures since 2007, most recently as SVP of International Publicity.

Graeme Hamilton

Graeme Hamilton is joining the Canadian Press as Montreal bureau chief. Hamilton has been Quebec correspondent for the National Post for the last 18 years.

Graham Thomson

Graham Thompson is voluntarily leaving the Edmonton Journal and Postmedia, but is clear in a farewell letter to readers that he is not “retiring,” saying his future plans are a “work in progress.” Thompson joined the Journal in 1995 from CBC-TV and has covered every Alberta premier since Don Getty.

Lisa Fuoco

Lisa Fuoco is returning to Corus to head up promotions for its Toronto radio stations. Fuoco was previously with Global News in various publicity and social media roles before joining Evanov last year as promotions manager for Z103.5 (CIDC-FM) and Jewel 88.5 (CKDX-FM) Toronto.

Jamieson Bridal

Jamieson Bridal is the new weekend announcer at Rebel 101.7 (CIDG-FM) Ottawa. Bridal was formerly morning host at 97.5 Juice FM (CKVV-FM) Kemptville, ON.

Kate Shingler, who had been assistant news director and senior producer with Global Montreal since 2014, has left to join the communications team with the McGill University Health Centre Foundation.

Kizzie Sutton

Kizzie Sutton is the new executive director of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF). Sutton, a graduate of the Seneca College Radio and Television program, was most recently programs manager at artsPlace in Canmore, AB.
