Women’s sport has dominated the most-watched moments of Paris 2024, according to Numeris data shared by CBC/Radio-Canada.
Led by the Team Canada Women’s Soccer quarterfinal against Germany last Saturday, which drew an audience of 3.4 million Canadians, the end of the match was also the most-watched moment on CBC to date, attracting 2.53 million viewers. More than 1.9 million tuned in to watch Summer McIntosh’s second gold medal win, in the women’s 200m butterfly; Team Canada Women’s Soccer win against France; the women’s 4x100m medley relay in the hopes of a fourth gold medal for McIntosh; and the Canadian Women’s Soccer team win against Colombia.
Rounding out the Top 10 were McIntosh’s gold medal race in the women’s 400m individual medley (1.613M); Team Canada’s intro during the Opening Ceremony (1.6M); Canadian Men’s Basketball against Spain (1.5M); McIntosh’s silver medal race in the women’s 400m freestyle (1.47M); and Nova Scotian Ellie Black’s performance during women’s artistic gymnastics (1.4M).
According to viewer data shared by the public broadcaster, CBC has been the most-watched English network in Canada among 2+ and 25-54 audiences. Canadians have also consumed over 18 million hours of Paris 2024 content on CBC’s digital and streaming platforms to date, up 74% over Tokyo 2020 and 106% over Beijing 2022. To date, time spent streaming Olympic content on CBC Gem is up 268% from the same period in Tokyo 2020 and up 184% from Beijing 2022.
“Audiences across the country have shown their wholehearted support for Team Canada so far at Paris 2024 by tuning into CBC’s coverage across our platforms, with new surprises and stories unfolding each day,” said Chris Wilson, CBC/Radio-Canada’s General Manager of Olympics, Paris 2024, in a release. “These Games have once again demonstrated the power of sport by uniting the country around these incredible athletes, and we will continue to share their triumphs and challenges with audiences through the end of the competition, and beyond.”
