DGC announces 2020 Television award nominees led by Cardinal, Hey Lady!

The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) has announced the 2020 DGC Awards nominations for Television Series, Movies for Television and Mini Series.

CTV’s Cardinal leads the nominations with five, including an Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies For Television and Mini-Series nod for Nathan Morlando. Cardinal also earned nominations for Dennis Davenport for Best Production Design in the same category. Hugh Elchuk and Sandy Pereira received individual nominations in the Best Picture Editing category, while the team of David McCallumBarry GilmoreJane TattersallDavid Caporale, and Brennan Mercer is nominated for Best Sound Editing.

CBC Gem Original comedy series, Hey Lady!, which stars Jayne Eastwood as a 75-year-old woman who refuses to let herself be put out to pasture, earned four nominations. Adriana MaggsSarah Polley & Will Bowes are nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement (Comedy Series). Hey Lady! also earned Ciara Vernon a Best Production Design (Comedy or Family Series) nod, with David Wharnsby nominated in the Best Picture Editing category. David Caporale, David McCallum, and Krystin Hunter are nominated for Best Sound Editing – Comedy or Family Series.

Netflix supernatural horror series Locke & Key has three nominations, including Outstanding Directorial Achievement (Dramatic Series) for Dawn Wilkinson; Best Production Design for Rory Cheyne; as well as Best Sound Editing – Dramatic Series.

The DGC received over 200 Television submissions this year.

Nominations for Feature Film, Documentary and Short Film will be announced after the DGC Awards nomination juries meet Sept. 12, ­as well as the long-list for the DGC’s Discovery Award highlighting emerging directors on their first or second feature.

Winners will be announced at the 19th Annual Awards the week of Oct. 24.
