Brent Bambury is retiring after more than four decades with the CBC.
Bambury announced his retirement on Saturday morning’s episode of Day 6, the weekly radio show blending current affairs, comedy and pop culture, he’s hosted since 2010.
Born and raised in Saint John, NB, Bambury started his career with the public broadcaster in the Saint John newsroom in 1979, moving to the Halifax bureau while studying English at Dalhousie University. He relocated to CBC Montreal in 1984 to work on all-night underground music show Brave New Waves, initially as a correspondent, before going on to serve as its host on CBC Stereo/CBC Radio 2 for 10 years.
From there, he moved into television in the early 1990s, serving as an entertainment reporter for CBC TV’s Midday and later was the show’s co-host alongside Tina Srebotnjak from 1995-2000 when the show ended its run.
In addition to regularly filling in as a host across TV and radio, he went on to co-create and host the game show, Off The Cuff, and afternoon current affairs program All in a Day. Prior to his current 17-year run with Day 6, he helped create and hosted Saturday morning live radio program, GO! on CBC Radio One.
“When I was doing campus radio music shows in the 90s, my friends and I dreamt of working with Brent Bambury on Brave New Waves,” said Senior Producer Gord Westmacott, in Bambury’s retirement announcement. “Twenty years later, I came to Day 6 and got the chance to do something even better. I’ve learned so much from working with Brent and had an incredible time doing it. The last 10 years have been a joy and I’m going to miss Brent immensely.”
Bambury’s final episode of Day 6 is set to air Saturday, Oct. 24.
