Global News unveiled its new morning show Tuesday that centralizes the network’s former local morning shows from Halifax to Saskatoon.
Anchored by meteorologist Ross Hull, Miranda Anthistle, and Jaden Lee-Lincoln, the inaugural show essentially delivered a national look at the morning headlines – focused between Nova Scotia and the Saskatchewan border – as Global Edmonton, Global Calgary and Global BC maintain local morning shows.
Localized weather is a permanent fixture on-screen, along with additional top and international stories presented in a news ticker format similar to 24-hour news channels like CBC News Channel or CP24. Additional features included a Science News Now segment, a health segment on the rise of tick-borne disease in Canada, and entertainment news.
Tuesday’s top stories featured Victoria Femia, reporting from Toronto’s Pearson Airport, on the tentative deal reached to end the West Jet strike; a weekend assault on Winnipeg Sea Bears star Teddy Allen in downtown Winnipeg; and a story on vandalism at a Montreal bakery.
Local shows sign off
Local morning shows in Halifax, Montreal, Winnipeg, and Regina and Saskatoon signed off on Friday, marking the end of the road for some longtime employees, including Global News Morning Halifax host Paul Brothers.
Brothers, who had anchored the Halifax morning show since its launch in 2013, thanked the “thousands of guests” who had walked through their doors over the last 13 and a half years.
“Thank you. I think I’ve interviewed everybody in the city at this point. It takes a lot to come on live TV, but it’s been our privilege to help you share your stories and give you that platform,” Brothers told viewers. “And when people always ask me what my favourite part of the job has been, I always say it’s the interviews. Meeting interesting people from all walks of life has been amazing. That’s the magic of morning television, isn’t it?”
Also departing Global Halifax are technical producer Sean Hargreaves and engineer Chad Allen.
