Corus Entertainment is undertaking another round of layoffs that will see the company part ways with an unknown number of Global News and Corus Radio personalities.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen and sustain our news and audio divisions, we have made programming changes across the country,” a spokesperson told Broadcast Dialogue late Wednesday. “These changes are designed to improve efficiency, support long-term sustainability, and allow us to continue supporting high-quality journalism and audio programming for our audiences.”
“As a result, we have had to say goodbye to some of our Global News and Corus Radio personalities – we greatly appreciate their time with us, and wish them the best in their future endeavours.”
Corus said the changes will be reflected on-air in the coming weeks. The company declined to verify reports that it’s ceasing television production in the Edmonton and Calgary markets or disclose how many positions might be impacted.
Among the on-air talent scrubbed from their station websites are Ed Garcia, afternoon host at Winnipeg’s Power 97 (CJKR-FM); and 103.1 Fresh Radio (CFHK-FM) London morning show, The Morning Rush with Mark LeBel and co-host Taylor Tsakoniatis.
Corus’ fiscal third quarter, which ended May 31, saw TV advertising revenue fall 20% year-over-year to $120.3 million, with total television revenue down 16% to $229.5 million. Radio revenue was down 15% to $20 million in the same period.
