Comedy continues to lead podcast listening, says latest Triton Digital U.S. Podcast Ranker

Triton Digital has unveiled its Q1 2026 U.S. Podcast Ranker, revealing Comedy, News and Society & Culture continue to make up the top three genres, with an uptick in emerging genres like Kids & Family and Health & Fitness.

Blending audience reach and behavioural data from Demos+, developed in collaboration with Signal Hill Insights, Triton says Q1 listening shifts suggest podcasts are becoming increasingly part of everyday routines, reflecting a broader evolution in listening habits as audiences increasingly turn to on-demand audio daily.

Comedy continues to claim 43.6% reach (unchanged from Q4 2025), accounting for 47 shows in the top 200. Triton says that’s largely fueled by viral Reddit and TikTok clips converting casual scrollers into full-episode listeners, illustrated by shows like Smosh Reads Reddit Stories and Distractible, while pods like Drink Champs and Kill Tony utilize short-form clips on those platforms as discovery engines.

Comedy was also among the genres experiencing the highest quarter-over-quarter growth in reach (+7% – 43.6% in Q1 2026 vs. 40.9% in Q4 2025), alongside Kids & Family (+9% – 2.4% in Q1 2026 vs. 2.2% in Q4 2025); and Health & Fitness (+8% – 9.7% in Q1 2026 vs. 9.0% in Q4 2025).

Sports having a moment

Sports is also having a moment, led by athlete-hosted shows like former NFL’er Carmelo Anthony’s 7PM in Brooklyn offering unfiltered perspectives fans can’t get from traditional broadcast. It also led genres for new ranker entries, suggesting sports audio is becoming more habitual, personality-driven, and closely aligned with how audiences want to follow the game. Tritons says FOX Sports’ First Things First is also an example of how established shows can successfully transition into audio, capturing audiences who prefer to listen on-demand and on the go.

“Podcasting continues to demonstrate both resilience and momentum as we enter 2026,” said Daryl Battaglia, SVP, Measurement Products & Strategy at Triton Digital. “We’re seeing a combination of consistency among top-performing shows alongside rapid innovation among top genres like Comedy and Sports. This balance is what makes podcasting such a powerful medium for both audience engagement and advertiser impact.”

Ranker moves

Good Hang with Amy Poehler was the podcast with the single biggest quarterly surge on the ranker, moving up 26 spots to slide into the top 10.

Other top movers included:

  • Smosh Reads Reddit Stories (Comedy) soaring 82 spots to #47
  • Freakonomics Radio (Society & Culture) jumping 40 spots to #41
  • Huberman Lab (Health & Fitness) climbing 38 spots to #13
  • Drink Champs (Music) rising 38 spots to #50
  • Distractible (Comedy) moving up 32 spots to #37
  • How I Built This with Guy Raz (Business) advancing 29 spots to #48
  • CreepCast (Society & Culture) rising 22 spots to #46
  • 48 Hours (True Crime) jumping 19 spots to #38
  • The Mel Robbins Podcast (Education) moving up 18 spots to #11

By average weekly download, the top three included Pod Save America [Audioboom]; Stuff You Should Know [iHeart Audience Network]; and The Dan Bongino Show [Cumulus Podcast Network], while overall The Joe Rogan Experience [Joe Rogan]; Crime Junkie [audiochuck]; and The Daily [The New York Times] led the top three.

Beyond the top genres driving engagement, Triton’s data identified several smaller categories emerging as “hidden gems” for marketers looking for highly concentrated, high-impact audiences.

Triton’s data found that Science podcasts similarly attract affluent, business-oriented listeners, while Fiction is proving to be a key entry point for Gen Z and diverse audiences, including Hispanic listeners.
