Marc Miller appointed new Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture

The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) is among the organizations congratulating Marc Miller on his appointment as the new Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages.

Monday’s cabinet shuffle came just days after Steven Guilbeault stepped down from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet, following the announcement of an energy deal with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

Miller, who hails from Quebec, most recently served as the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship under Justin Trudeau.

“We congratulate Minister Miller on his appointment as Canada’s new Minister of Culture and Identity. His deep experience in government is welcome, particularly as Canada faces a moment when we must safeguard and promote our cultural sovereignty,” said CMPA President & CEO Reynolds Mastin, in a statement. “The CMPA looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the federal government and Minister Miller to grow our media production sector in Canada and to champion Canadian stories on screens at home and around the world.”

“We also thank Minister Guilbeault, who was a passionate advocate for Canada’s independent film and television production sector and steadfast in his support for the industry throughout his two terms,” Mastin added.

Following Carney’s swearing in this past March, Guilbeault was removed from the Environment portfolio and reassigned as Minister of Canadian Culture and Identity, and Parks Canada, in addition to serving as Carney’s Quebec Lieutenant. Guilbeault previously served as Canadian Heritage Minister from Nov. 2019 to Oct. 2021.
