CBC’s Joanne McPherson recognized with RTDNA Distinguished Service Award

RTDNA Canada is recognizing Joanne McPherson with its 2023 Distinguished Service Award, presented to a member who has played a major role in the continuing success of the organization.

McPherson, the Managing Editor for Program and Content Strategies for CBC News, currently sits on the RTDNA board overseeing sponsorship for the organization.

Her resume with the public broadcaster includes stops as an associate producer with CBC’s Washington bureau; acting as a producer on Joe Schlesinger’s program, Foreign Assignment; serving as assignment editor for the Ontario region; and working for CBC Newsworld (now CBC News Network) as a line up and control room producer and executive producer of Morning Live, in addition to being responsible for Breaking News.

McPherson joined the CBC management team in 2009, helping transition the newsroom to be structured for live broadcasting and went on to lead platform integration across the health, business, and entertainment content units. She now oversees promotions, external communications, and marketing on behalf of CBC News with CBC’s Communications, Marketing, Brand and Research department.

“Joanne rightly deserves her place on the impressive list of names of past winners of this award,” said Brodie Fenlon, Editor in Chief, Executive Director of Programs and Standards, CBC News. She is deeply committed to journalism and the work of RTDNA Canada to lift up and celebrate the best of us in this business.”

Past recipients of the Distinguished Service Award include 680 News News Director Scott Metcalfe; AM640, Newstalk 1010, and Global News Toronto alum Dave Trafford; and former Canada AM executive producer and current RTDNA Canada President Lis Travers.
