CBC’s The Porter leads 2023 Canadian Screen Awards nominations

CBC drama series The Porter leads the nominees for this year’s Canadian Screen Awards, set to recognize talent across 145 television, film and digital media categories.

Announced by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (the Canadian Academy) on Wednesday morning, The Porter leads both Television and overall nominations with 19, including Best Drama Series and Best Lead Performer, Drama Series nominations for Aml Ameen, Ronnie Rowe Jr., and Mouna Traoré. CBC’s Sort Of and CBC Gem’s Detention Adventure received 15 nominations each, followed by CBC’s Pretty Hard Cases with 11.

In the Film categories, Clement Virgo’s Brother earned a leading 14 nominations, including Achievement in Direction and Performance in a Leading Role for Lamar Johnson. Stéphane Lafleur’s Viking follows with 13, while David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future earned 11 nods.

Digital Media nominations were led by Revenge of the Black Best Friend (CBC Gem) with nine, including Best Web Program or Series, Fiction; followed by Avocado Toast The Series (OutTVGo) with seven and Tokens (Facebook/YouTube) with four.

The 2023 awards will be the first to feature gender-neutral performance categories for lead and supporting performers in film and television.

The 2023 Canadian Screen Awards will be presented across seven awards presentations, in-person at Meridian Hall in Toronto from Tuesday, April 11 through Friday, April 14, culminating with The Canadian Screen Awards with Samantha Bee, to be broadcast Sunday, April 16 at 8 p.m. (9 AT, 9:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem.

The hour-long broadcast special will feature interviews and highlights from the awards presentations, in addition to the presentation of the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award. This year’s Special Award recipients, including Ryan Reynolds, Catherine O’Hara, and Simu Liu, will also be featured.

6 p.m. ET – The News, Documentary & Factual Awards

Wednesday, April 12 
12 p.m. ET – The Children’s & Animation Awards, presented by Shaw Rocket Fund
6 p.m. ET –  The Lifestyle & Reality Awards, presented by CTV

Thursday, April 13
12 p.m. ET – The Digital & Immersive Awards
6 p.m. ET – The Cinematic Arts Awards, presented by Telefilm Canada and supported by Cineplex

Friday, April 14 
4 p.m. ET – The Comedic & Dramatic Arts Awards

Sunday, April 16
8 p.m. (9 p.m. AT, 9:30 p.m. NT) – The Canadian Screen Awards with Samantha Bee on CBC and CBC Gem

The nominees for the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards were chosen by voting members of the Canadian Academy and nominating juries, conducted virtually with representatives from the film, television, and digital media industries. The membership will cast their votes between Feb. 22 and March 10 to determine the winners.
