U.S. music streams surpass one trillion in a single year

Music audio streams in the U.S. crossed the one trillion mark this past Saturday, according to new data from Luminate, marking the first time that the streaming milestone has been reached in a single year.

Luminate says U.S. music listeners have spent roughly 960,000 years streaming music in 2022 with audio streaming up nearly 25% globally during the first half of the year.

By the numbers, the Top 5 most-streamed songs for 2022 as of Nov. 24 are:

  1. Harry Styles “As It Was” (558M on-demand U.S. audio streams in 2022)

  4. Kodak Black “Super Gremlin” (443M on-demand U.S. audio streams)

  5. Bad Bunny & Chencho Corleone“Me Porto Bonito (425M on-demand U.S. audio streams)

Other streaming highlights for the year included Taylor Swift’s Midnights, which during its release week, Oct. 21 – 27, accounted for one out of 42 streams in all of the U.S.

Coinciding with the release of Season 4 of Netflix’s Stranger Things, streams for Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” saw a surge of +20,995% in the U.S. during the week of May 27.

Latin music had its highest streaming week ever during the week of May 12 with 1.8 billion streams, largely driven by Bad Bunny’s Grammy-nominated album Un Verano sin Ti. This marked the first time that Latin music outstreamed Country music in the U.S. in a single week.
