Longtime CTV personality Marci Ien has announced she’s taking a leave of absence from Bell Media to seek the federal Liberal nomination in Toronto Centre.
Ien, who has most recently been co-hosting roundtable current affairs show, The Social, made the announcement on social media Thursday, saying “I’ve always strived to provide a voice to people who need it most — and now more than ever, we need all Canadians’ voices and aspirations to be reflected in the hard work of building a better future. That’s why I’m running to be your Liberal candidate in Toronto Centre.”
I’ve had the great privilege of connecting with Canadians as a broadcaster throughout my career. Now I’m hoping to connect in a new way, and I’ve taken leave from Bell Media as I begin this exciting new chapter.

Ien, who started her journalism career with CHCH-TV in Hamilton, has been with CTV since 1997, holding roles as a reporter and anchor, in addition to serving as co-host of Canada AM for 13 years. Of Trinidadian descent, she got her start in television early as one of the kids featured on Crossroads Christian Communications’ syndicated series Circle Square. Ien also sits on the Board of Governors at her alma mater, Ryerson University.
A date for a byelection in Toronto Centre has yet to be determined, following the recent resignation of Finance Min. Bill Morneau. Ien isn’t the only candidate to throw her hat in the ring for the nomination. Lawyer Paul Saguil, Deputy Head of TD Bank’s Global Sanctions Compliance and Anti-Bribery / Anti-Corruption Program, is also seeking the nomination. Toronto Centre has been held by the Liberals since 1993.
