Young and Northcott named new hosts of CBC News: World Report

John Northcott and Marcia Young have been announced as the new hosting team on flagship CBC Radio morning newscast, CBC News: World Report.

Marcia Young and John Northcott have been announced as the new hosting team on flagship CBC Radio morning newscast, CBC News: World Report.

Young shifts from weekends to now host the program Monday through Thursday, while Northcott steps away from anchoring on CBC News Network to take up hosting World Report, Friday through Sunday. Former weekday host, Nil Köksal, stepped away from the newscast earlier this year to take up co-hosting duties on CBC Radio’s As It Happens with the departure of Carol Off.

Young has been with CBC since 1998, including reporting from Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan, Chicago, New York and more recently, Barbados, where she covered the island nation’s break from its colonial past to become a republic.

After 30 years in broadcasting, Northcott returns to radio where his career began. The veteran journalist has been working with the CBC off and on since the 1990s, reporting on breaking news from around the world, including time as the public broadcaster’s Japan correspondent, while also working for Japanese public broadcaster, NHK.

“The depth of experience Marcia and John bring to the program, and their shared ability to connect how the headlines are impacting people wherever they live, can only deepen the great relationship they have both built with morning audiences,” said Seema Patel, Senior Director, CBC News Programs, in an announcement. ”I look forward to hearing them continue to tell the stories that will help listeners better understand the day’s news as it unfolds and reach more and more Canadians on every platform.”

CBC says the fast-paced 10-minute newscast, which features a blend of interview clips, draws almost a million listeners, live and on-demand, seven days a week. The public broadcaster says World Report is “integral” to the success of its local morning shows across the country – 21 of which are #1 in their market. The program has been recognized by RTDNA Canada the last two years in a row as Best Radio Newscast.

Weekdays, World Report is heard locally at 5 a.m, 6 a.m, 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. (6, 7 and 8 AT; 6:30, 6:30, and 8:30 NT), and weekends at 6 a.m., 7 a.m., 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. (7, 8 and 9 AT; 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 NT).
