WABE 2024: The Must-Attend Event for Media and Technology Professionals

Dear WABE friends,

As summer heats up across Canada, so do projects, holiday coverage, and media purchases. While many of us may leave our desks a little earlier on Fridays, numerous workers in live production are just arriving at job sites, gearing up for a busy month. The NHL playoffs in Edmonton, the Canada Open in Hamilton, CFL games, and Blue Jays matches herald the full swing of summer sports events.

Newsrooms nationwide start reporting on weather events, storms, and community festivals. Film crews kick into high gear, filming series and movies set in warm weather, while radios pump out tunes to cottage country, where cell coverage and internet access can be spotty. Pro AV installers are also busy in offices, updating technology while workers and students are away for the summer.

The Alert Ready Emergency system, a partnership across all communications platforms, ensures we stay informed and safe with alerts and weather warnings about impending storms. All this activity keeps our industry strong, vibrant, and connected throughout the summer, with WABE members playing a crucial role.

Next month, I’ll be heading to the Olympics in Paris, taking a leave of absence from my role maintaining local transmitter sites. Like many broadcast technicians who service these sites, my weeks have been packed with filter changes, HVAC maintenance, and ensuring backup generators are ready to run during the summer storm season.

Strengthening our industry also means we at WABE have been working diligently to fortify our organization. This June, we have a special meeting to propel our organization forward. Initiatives include the launch of a new scholarship to support students entering the media and technology industry, opening our membership additional people who want to be a part of WABE, adjusting the timing and format of our AGM to include members who might not always attend the conference, and updating and adjusting our executive roles and terms to gain more volunteer strength and facilitate the achievement of our new strategic plan goals.

We do all this while actively connecting with every organization that might find value in our presence in Edmonton. We rely on your help to spread the word. Liking and sharing posts, as well as inviting people to attend, are just a few of the many ways to propel our industry connections in Edmonton and throughout Canada, forging ahead in media’s new landscape.

I can’t wait to see you all in Edmonton!
