Telefilm, Birks to celebrate the year’s Women in Film during TIFF

Telefilm Canada and Birks have announced the honourees for the sixth annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film.

This year’s honourees include director Nettie Wild (KONELĪNE: our land beautiful, Interrupted); actors Tantoo Cardinal (Godless, North of 60) and Pascale Bussières (Nous sommes les autres, Innocent); screenwriter Susan Coyne (Slings and Arrows, The Man Who Invented Christmas); and emerging directors Stella Meghie (Jean of the Joneses) and Jeanne Leblanc (Isla Blanca).

They’ll be celebrated at a private event on Sept. 10 during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). 

“This year’s recipients are truly inspirational, representing both the diversity and depth of talent in our industry, and stand as examples that other women can aspire to,” said Christa Dickenson, executive director, Telefilm Canada

This year’s honourees join Birks Tribute alumni Jennifer Baichwal, Tatiana Maslany, Deepa Mehta, Alanis Obomsawin, Sandra Oh, Catherine O’Hara, Sarah Polley, Mina Shum, Karine Vanasse, Sherry White, and Ellen Wong, among others.

A 23-member jury of Canadian journalists, bloggers and on-air personalities covering the world of art, culture and entertainment was tasked with selecting this year’s group including Victoria Ahearn (The Canadian Press), Ilana Banks (CBC), Linda Barnard (freelance), Catherine Beauchamp (Tapis Rose), Martin Gignac (Journal Métro), Liz Braun (Sun Media/Postmedia Network), Richard Crouse (CTV Pop Life), Manon Dumais (Le Devoir), Helen Faradji (Radio-Canada), Noreen Flanagan (Fashion Magazine), Isabelle Fleury (Radio-Canada), Dana Gee (Global TV), Teri Hart (CityTV), Peter Knegt (CBC), Katherine Monk (CBC/Ex-Press.com), Sylvie Mousseau (Acadie Nouvelle), Ryan Porter (freelance), Ingrid Randoja (Cineplex Magazine), Regan Reid (Playback), Alex Rose (Cult MTL), Marci Ien (The Social), Radheyan Simonpillai (NOW Magazine), and Will Wong (Mr. Will Wong).
