Netflix has announced it has hired Tara Woodbury as the streamer’s inaugural Canadian content executive.

Woodbury, who joins Netflix Canada as Manager, Canada Series, formerly oversaw domestic and international development at Sphere Media. In the new role, she’ll support the development and commissioning of scripted series in English and French for Netflix in Canada. She’ll also maintain relationships with writers, directors and producers and identify up and coming Canadian talent.

“Bringing global visibility to Canadian storytellers and their work was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Woodbury said in a company announcement. “I’m looking forward to joining Netflix and working with creators from across the country to discover new and compelling stories to share.”

Woodbury, who had been with Sphere Media for the last five years, has also served as Executive Producer of medical drama Transplant and produced sci-fi thriller feature Night Raiders by Danis Goulet. Her résumé includes stops at the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) as Film Programs Manager, in addition to development roles at Toronto’s Amaze Film + Television and Alcina Pictures.

She’ll start her new role with Netflix in mid-November, reporting to Danielle Woodrow, Director, Canada Series. Both will be based at the company’s new office in Toronto.

“It’s no secret that the pool of creative talent in Canada runs deep,” added Peter Friedlander,  Vice President, Scripted Series, UCAN, in a release. “We’re confident that with Tara’s addition to the team we will increase our ability to work with new and established creators locally to bring even more Canadian stories to our members from around the world.”
