ACTRA Toronto announced the winners of the 20th ACTRA Awards in Toronto on Sunday night with CBC series Sort Of taking the Members’ Choice Series Ensemble Award.
The award was accepted by Kaya Kanashiro and Aden Bedard, who play children Violet and Henry in the series, which stars Bilal Baig as a first generation Pakistani-Canadian trying to navigate embracing a non-binary identity with cultural expectations. A second season of Sort Of was greenlit by CBC and HBO Max last month.
Angela Asher was awarded Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Female Voice for her performance as the Voice of God in the trailer for experimental short, Silver Cord (Space Mop). Joshua Graham won in the Male Voice category as Sam Whippet in Netflix animated series Go, Dog. Go! (DreamWorks; WildBrain Studios).
Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Female was claimed by Kelly McCormack as Darren in Sugar Daddy (Clique Pictures; Violator Films; Floyder Films), while Outstanding Performance – Gender Non-Conforming or Male went to Dayo Ade for his performance as Anthony in Cinema of Sleep (Inferno Pictures).
The inaugural ACTRA Toronto Stunt Ensemble Award, introduced this year, went to Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City for a big rig stunt in the horror/action film. Stunt Coordinator Dan Skene accepted the award on behalf of the stunt ensemble.
ACTRA Toronto’s 2022 Award of Excellence was presented to actor Art Hindle, who with 200 IMDb credits to his name, has also volunteered his time and celebrity to ACTRA for 16 years, serving on ACTRA Toronto Council, ACTRA National Council and was a VP on the ACTRA Toronto Executive for a decade.
ACTRA Toronto is the largest organization within ACTRA, representing more than 15,000 of Canada’s 27,000 professional performers working in recorded media in Canada.
