Prime Video greenlights seven new series for Canada

Prime Video has unveiled seven new projects greenlit for Canada, including three to be directed and executive produced by comedian Tom Green.

They include an untitled comedy special capturing his recent 40+ city comedy tour across North America, a documentary following his career, and Tom Green Country, a reality series following his move from Hollywood to a farm outside Ottawa.

Other titles announced include Canadian true crime docuseries In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery, looking into the 2010 drowning death of small-town Alberta school teacher Laura Letts-Beckett, which her husband Peter Beckett has claimed was a tragic accident, despite the assertions of police and prosecutors.

Another untitled true crime docuseries from Blink49 follows a still unfolding case in Toronto. The project is directed by Henry Roosevelt (Take Care of Maya), executive produced by Toby DormerAllison Brough and producer Allyson Luchak (The Staircase).

Blue Ant Studios, in association with Prime Video, National Geographic, and APTN, is behind Hard North, a reality series following a diverse group of young Canadians as they embark on a four-season mission to build a life in the unforgiving Canadian wilderness, taking viewers through some of the country’s most remote and rugged landscapes as the aspiring homesteaders face the harsh realities of living off the land, building shelter and foraging for food and water.

Also in the works is unscripted docuseries 50k First Dates, the true story of Nesh Pillay, a 32-year-old woman who mysteriously lost 15 years of her memory, including recollection of her fiancé. Produced by Peacock Alley Entertainment, Carrie Mudd (TravelersTiny Pretty Things) and Brent Hodge (Parma BroThe Longest Third Date) serve as executive producers, with Hodge also serving as director.

“We are excited to continue to greenlight and commission to produce content from Canada that will join our growing slate of Canadian stories that include drama, comedy, unscripted reality, documentary in both English and French,” said Brent Haynes, Head of Originals, Canada at Amazon MGM Studios. “Following the success of Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make BelieveThe Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith, and our two hockey documentaries with NHL productions, today’s announcement is our largest number of unscripted titles to be greenlit”.

The new series join Prime Monday Night Hockey, which will stream all national regular season Monday night NHL games in English for the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons. Prime Video and the NHL have also announced NHL Coast To Coast, a weekly whiparound studio show to stream live Thursday nights in Canada, featuring live look-ins, highlights and analysis of every NHL game. The series is produced by NHL Productions in collaboration with Prime Video.
